Has something to do with the growing unpopularity of the Trump immigration policy , the detentions part?
Schroyer has been serving as a senior adviser to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. The White House announced the withdrawal of Schroyer’s nomination in a short statement.
Schroyer helped spearhead the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s effort to train its 700-plus troopers to enforce immigration laws and work with ICE to arrest undocumented people, according to the Department of Homeland Security and state officials. He was deputized to make ICE arrests himself last year after completing a 40-hour online training program — a shortened effort that some say does not adequately prepare officers for the fraught world of immigration enforcement.
Despite Oklahoma’s lower profile in immigration enforcement, the state has become a national leader in terms of per capita immigration arrests, according to a Washington Post analysis.
The Senate has not confirmed an ICE director in over a decade. And there were mounting signs that Schroyer would face resistance clearing that hurdle.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), who chairs the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, had yet to schedule his nomination hearing. He also would not comment on whether Schroyer had his support. Schroyer is close to Mullin, who over the summer hit a rough patch with Trump and members of his base, many of whom accuse him of not being tough enough in advancing the deportation campaign.
Democrats, immigration advocates and many members of the public, in contrast, say ICE has been unnecessarily aggressive, targeting many law-abiding immigrants who have lived in the United States for years.
ICE has ramped up arrests in recent months. In all, federal authorities detained more than 49,000 migrants in July, the highest total during Trump’s second administration, according to a Post analysis of government data.
The abrupt withdrawal marked a loss for Mullin, who resigned from his job as a U.S. senator from Oklahoma in March to helm DHS after the agency’s most violent and tumultuous chapter since it was created after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Federal immigration and border agents shot and killed two U.S. citizens in Minnesota in January, and Mullin, before taking office in March, said he wanted to keep ICE focused on arresting criminal offenders and out of the news….
….
Inside the White House and ICE, however, officials expressed puzzlement at the selection of Schroyer, given that he has no experience managing such a large and high-profile agency…
Note….
Trump & Co. ARE caught between the politics of MORE enforcement and the need to Cut it back for Political and yes…Economic reasons….
You can also notice the Stephen Miller HAS disappeared from media/press reports, eh?
