The difference in supposed ‘Savings’ wasn’t even close according the Government Accountability Office’s report….
President Donald Trump’s cost-cutting initiative that roiled the federal bureaucracy in the first year of his second term overstated its savings, a congressional government watchdog said Thursday.
Number fudging at the Department of Government Efficiency — the executive agency spearheaded by Elon Musk to ostensibly eliminate excess spending — had already been documented in a myriad of news reports. Among them, an August 2025 analysis of DOGE’s receipts by POLITICO found only $1.4 billion of its claimed $32.7 billion in contract savings was legitimate.
But the Government Accountability Office’s findings, released Thursday, add to the body of work suggesting that the now-defunct agency’s legacy is less tied to actual broad cost-cutting in Washington than it is to the high-profile fights surrounding the shuttering of the U.S. Agency for International Developmentand other small agencies, the contested firing of thousands of government employees and setting the tone for an unapologetically disruptive second Trump administration.
Taken at face value, DOGE’s claimed savings of $215 billion are a drop in the bucket compared to a federal budget that is around $7 trillion each year.
Meanwhile, Thursday’s report, centered on the $110 billion reported savings listed on the agency’s Wall of Receipts, found that “some savings estimates are incorrect or lack supporting evidence.”
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
