President Trump called in a new interview for the Republican Party to “nationalize” voting in the United States, an aggressive rhetorical step that was likely to raise new worries about his administration’s efforts to involve itself in election matters.
During an extended monologue about immigration on a podcast released on Monday by Dan Bongino, his former deputy F.B.I. director, Mr. Trump called for Republican officials to “take over” voting procedures in 15 states, though he did not name them.
“The Republicans should say, ‘We want to take over,’” he said. “We should take over the voting, the voting in at least many — 15 places. The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting.”
Under the Constitution, American elections are governed primarily by state law, leading to a decentralized process in which voting is administered by county and municipal officials in thousands of precincts across the country. Mr. Trump, however, has long been fixated on the false claims that U.S. elections are rife with fraud and that Democrats are perpetrating a vast conspiracy to have undocumented immigrants vote and lift the party’s turnout.
Mr. Trump’s remarkable call for a political party to seize the mechanisms of voting follows a string of moves from his administration to try to exert more control over American elections, as he and his allies continue to make false claims about his 2020 defeat.
Last week, F.B.I. agents seized ballots and other voting recordsfrom the 2020 election from an election center in Fulton County, Ga., where his allies have for years pursued false claims of election fraud. The New York Times reported on Monday that Mr. Trump had spoken on the phone to the F.B.I. agents involved in the Fulton County raid, praising and thanking them.
The Justice Department, which has been newly politicized under Mr. Trump, is demanding that numerous states, including Minnesota, turn over their full voter rolls as the Trump administration tries to build a national voter file.
In March, Mr. Trump signed an executive order that tried to make significant changes to the electoral process, including requiring documentary proof of citizenship and demanding that all mail ballots be received by the time polls close on Election Day. But that effort has largely been rebuffed by courts.
On social media, Mr. Trump has pushed for even more drastic changes. In August, he wrote that he wanted to end the use of mail-in ballots and potentially the use of voting machines….

There is no evidence that a significant number of noncitizens have voted in any American election. A 2024 audit by Georgia’s secretary of state found that just 20 of the 8.2 million people registered to vote in Georgia were not citizens, and only nine had ever voted….

For all the anger that Donald Trump generates among so many Americans on a daily basis on one front after another, I just cannot force myself to forget how many Democrats seemed content to let him slide back into the Presidency because they did not want to offend Joe Biden’s ego, even after the June 2024 debate.

Everyone should have known what Trump is, a long time ago, and what a danger he would be in a second term. I am criticizing the concept that for a while at least, a lot of Democrats were fine with seeing Trump win win because “Joe deserves to do what he wants on his terms.”
If you are talking about Biden, putting aside the fact that his policies and record proved to be unpopular with the American people, it is very clear that many people around him were well aware that his health was such that had no business running for another term in 2024 and certainly would not have been able to function effectively as President in a second term, and others around him were deliberately kept in the dark as to those facts.
He never should have run, but had he dropped out the day after the June debate, instead of a month later, it is at least more possible that Harris could have eked out a win.

Pull what off? It depends, but he will try something, including the possibility of armed agents outside of polling places trying to keep voters away, or using the force of the federal government to seize the ballots and voting machines of places he will declare “corrupt.”
Everyone must be prepared for these things to happen and have a plan on what the reaction will be.
If the election is held, and Democrats win the House, while Republicans, as expected keep the Senate, will the Senate Majority Leader stand up to the demands of Trump to adjourn Congress under Article II Section 3 (something which has never been done before) and prevent the House from being seated?

Instead of old hands (in Congress or in his own administration) dissuading him from a dangerous or unwise action, he’s bent Congressional leaders around his little finger and surrounded his extended Cabinet with those who are either shameless toadies and sycophants, or else dangerous people with a very sharp objective and plan, such as Stephen Miller (deport a million non-white immigrants a year) or Russell Vought (complete Project 2025).
And Trump will never let go of any crazy, pernicious idea he feels invested in, even after momentary concessions, viz. Greenland, breaking up the U.N. and NATO, hot military action against Iran, eliminating Maduro…

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) on Tuesday rejected President Trump’s call for Republicans in Washington to “nationalize” voting in the United States and “take over” the management of elections in 15 states.
Thune said that while he strongly supports requiring voters to show identification to prove they are citizens, he does not support the federal government seizing the power to run elections, noting the Constitution gives that power to the states.
“I’m supportive of only citizens voting and showing ID at polling places. I think that makes sense. … But I’m not in favor of federalizing elections, no. I think that’s a constitutional issue,” Thune told reporters.
“I’m a big believer in decentralized and distributed power. And I think it’s harder to hack 50 election systems than it is to hack one. In my view, at least, that’s always a system that has worked pretty well,” he said of the benefits of empowering states to run federal elections…..
