Former Vice President Kamala Harris revealed in her upcoming book that former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was her “first choice” for a running mate in her 2024 presidential run, but that he would have proved “too risky.”
The Atlantic reported on an excerpt of her book “107 Days” on Wednesday, detailing Harris’s assessment that Buttigieg “would have been an ideal partner — if I were a straight white man.”
“But we were already asking a lot of America: to accept a woman, a Black woman, a Black woman married to a Jewish man,” the former vice president wrote. “Part of me wanted to say, ‘Screw it, let’s just do it.’ But knowing what was at stake, it was too big of a risk.”
“And I think Pete also knew that — to our mutual sadness,” she added.
The former Transportation secretary was on the shortlist for Harris’s running mate last year, after former President Biden dropped out of the race following pressure from his own party over his physical and mental abilities to hold office. Other potential candidates included Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D), Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D). Harris ultimately went with Walz.
Both Harris and Buttigieg have also been on the radar for 2028….

Buttigieg would have done a lot better in the debate with Vance than Walz did but picking someone from Biden’s Cabinet would not have been the best move. By putting this in her book, clearly there is some bad blood between Harris and Walz.
The obvious choice should have been Josh Shapiro. They needed to win PA, and with the Governor there they would have at least won that state. Plus, they would have saved the PA U.S. Senate seat and I believe three close House districts that went Republican that would have gone the other way.
What she will not say is that riskier, at least for the activists in the party, than picking Buttigieg because he was gay, was picking a Jewish guy, especially since as she mentioned, she is married to one herself.

Kamala Harris Was Not a Fan of Josh Shapiro
Former Vice President Kamala Harris hits Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) in her new book saying he seemed more interested in defining the role for himself as her possible running mate than helping her win, the New York Times reports.
She also recounts Shapiro questioning an aide about the pieces of art he could use to decorate the vice president’s residence.
You know what she should have been a bigger fan of?
Winning an election.

Pete Buttigieg Joins the Fight Against Redistricting
“Former U.S. transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg sees an opening for Hoosiers who oppose redistricting mid-decade, as President Donald Trump has asked of Indiana’s Republican leaders,” the Indianapolis Star reports.
“There’s a moment of hesitation right now. There’s clearly a critical mass of lawmakers that have yet to commit to the idea of redrawing the maps mid-decade, which is why Gov. Mike Braun hasn’t yet called a special session to do so.”
Said Buttigieg: “And that’s where we come in… It is time for all of us to encourage our Republican friends in this Statehouse to show some backbone before it’s too late. We can still do the right thing. And if they do, we should give them some credit for it. I mean, it’s a low bar. Refraining from cheating is a low bar. But you got to start somewhere.”
Kamala Harris claims in her book that minutes before she went on stage to debate Donald Trump, Joe Biden called her to yell at her, for “badmouthing” him.
Besides the above, which is absolutely chilling, other aspects of this book seem pretty juicy.
She says a lot of bad things about Gavin Newsom, and also takes shots at Gretchen Whitmer ,JB Pritzker, and Josh Shapiro. She says she liked Mark Kelly but was reluctant to put him on the ticket because his military record would be considered a negative, so I guess maybe that explains why she picked another veteran, with less of a military record.
Harris said her husband Doug wanted her to pick Shapiro but the staff wanted Walz.
I forgot to add.. the tenor of this book makes it seem to me like she really is not planning to run again.

I am wondering if james will attempt to defend the information that Joe Biden called her minutes before her debate with Trump to yell at her about disloyalty. She makes it clear in the book that was she was upset by this.
Was Biden trying to rattle her? Did he not realize there was a debate that night? Did he not care?
This tidbit seems far more substantial than any sort of Veepstakes drama.
