California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said Tuesday that his state would redraw its House maps after President Trump failed to respond to a letter the governor sent him urging Trump to have red states call off redistricting efforts.
“DONALD ‘TACO’ TRUMP, AS MANY CALL HIM, ‘MISSED’ THE DEADLINE!!! CALIFORNIA WILL NOW DRAW NEW, MORE ‘BEAUTIFUL MAPS,’ THEY WILL BE HISTORIC AS THEY WILL END THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY (DEMS TAKE BACK THE HOUSE!),” Newsom wrote in a statement on the social platform X put out through his press office, meant to mock how Trump writes his posts on Truth Social.
“BIG PRESS CONFERENCE THIS WEEK WITH POWERFUL DEMS AND GAVIN NEWSOM — YOUR FAVORITE GOVERNOR — THAT WILL BE DEVASTATING FOR ‘MAGA.’ THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER! — GN,” he added.
Newsom penned a letter to Trump on Monday pressing the president to have Texas and other red states stop their mid-decade redistricting efforts, saying “you are playing with fire, risking the destabilization of our democracy, while knowing that California can neutralize any gains you hope to make.”
“If you will not stand down, I will be forced to lead an effort to redraw the maps in California to offset the rigging of maps in red states,” he added. “But if the other states call off their redistricting efforts, we will happily do the same.” ….

Republicans are bracing for an unfavorable political environment given the historical midterm headwinds the sitting president’s party typically faces.
Newsom said his state was already planning to call a special election for November over redistricting as Democrats in the Golden State look to neutralize any gains Republicans may get from Texas’s new House map.
Other Democratic states are also eyeing potential redraws of their House maps. …
They have to get voters to come out in November of *this year* and say they want to do this. There will be lots of ads on tv opposing it. I do not know if that is a sure thing. Voters may not like Republicans doing it elsewhere but that doesn’t mean they want Democrats to do the same in their state. Newsom and company have to hope that there are a lot of partisans who think “turn about is fair play” rather than just see this as a right or wrong issue.
Texas is saying they can draw maps to get even more seats now if California does this, but who knows how much they can stretch the limits.
The bottom line is that the quorum jumping among Texas Democrats was always doomed to fail. They said they succeeded by “bringing attention” to the matter. I do not know if the “average voter” is paying the kind of attention that the partisan politically attuned crowd does. The attention it drew was that it made Democrats look like hypocrites for fleeing to Illinois, where this type of gerrymandering has already happened (albeit not mid decade) and many in their base are going to be upset that they will have lost this battle anyway.
Agreed on the Texas Dem’s losing this….

Swing voters do not really pay attention to the mainstream media the way the 7 or 8 actual human beings who will read this do.
I think it is far from a given that Democrats will be able to cancel out what is happening in Texas, and especially if it spreads to other states like Florida and Ohio. Even if they can though and even perhaps if they should in the name of unconventional warfare (i.e. Israel fighting for its survival against Hamas), it does not make any of this right or good. The entire country is the worse off for it.
The Midtern Elections ARE gonna give the DEmocrats a Jeffries Speakership…..

Mamdani and his crew want to primary Jeffries. Is there even a guarantee he will be on the ballot to be reelected next November. (Yeah I bet he will but the point stands about divisions in the party.)
Yes, obviously the redistricting efforts are just a naked power grab and they do not even try to hide it. You are underestimating the ability of it to work.
I will say what I have said before in regards to midterm elections and the party out of the White House. Falling just short of taking over Congress and having a one party dominated system to run against may be a benefit for 2028.

Republicans are already denouncing the move. The nine-member California Republican House delegation released a joint statement Thursday pointing to the newest POLITICO-Citrin Center-Possibility Lab survey which found strong bipartisan majorities prefer district lines be drawn by an independent commission than lawmakers…..
Nine GOPer’s would lose their seats negating the Texas efforts to make gains for Republicans in the US House….
And this is JUST California….
It would not be nine seats. If you look at the nine districts that they are talking about being changed, it includes districts that are already held by Democrats. It just makes them more Democrat. I would not have thought those particular incumbents were vulnerable in 2026 anyway, some of the Republicans that would be defeated in this scenario were probably already being counted on to lose.
Based on the story, it looks like three Republican districts, that the party would have been expected to win might then be heavily favored to go Democrat and two other districts Democrats were already assuming they could win, will just become easier to win. It’s definitely not going to flip nine seats. A couple of more competitive seats held by Republicans will get more Republican voters in order to alter the map elsewhere.
Everyone needs to understand though, this plan has to go to the voters this November and pass statewide. That is not getting much discussion. Maybe it will pass because California Democrats are so motivated and Republicans will not show up in an odd year election, but I think there are a lot of questions with that. Are they absolutely sure the voters are willing to think and act like politicians and greenlight something they believe is wrong and are even being told is fundamentally wrong?
The safe Republican seats could get whipped out…
