Joe Biden hung out with the Press last night…Open Thread 4/28/2024

Joe Biden, the Real President, actually spent time with the While House media members, a group he and his handlers have avoided like the plague….

While squinting at the lights?

He appeared to actually enjoy himself….

Started out with jokes , then proceeded to diss Donald Trump  and ended his comments with a heartfelt pitch for why people should vote for him….

He’s gonna HAVE TO spend more time feeding them as the election gets closer and his poll numbers stay close to Trump….

But the media got a chance to hang out together dressed up with the President, a guy they chase every day,,..

And even share some laughs, even if they had to walk past protesters to get in the place….

 

“The 2024 election is in full swing and, yes, age is an issue,” President Biden told the black-tie crowd. “I’m a grown man running against a 6-year-old.”

“Can we just acknowledge how refreshing it is,” comedian Colin Jost later added, “to see a president of the United States at an event that doesn’t begin with a bailiff saying ‘all rise!’”

For most of the evening, Trump ignored the dinner and posted instead about presidential immunity and political witch hunts. Shortly after 1 a.m., he finally chimed in on Truth Social: “The White House Correspondents’ Dinner was really bad. Colin Jost BOMBED, and Crooked Joe was an absolute disaster! Doesn’t get much worse than this!”

So, basically, another day on the campaign trail.

But for the denizens of Washington’s political media, it was a special occasion. The correspondents’ dinner is ostensibly a playful celebration of the codependent relationship between Washington politicians and reporters who spend the rest of the year covering them and deadly serious issues: Trump’s legal trials, looming uncertainty about what will happen in November (and beyond). The Ukraine war. The Israel-Gaza war….

Biden’s own zingerswere directed almost entirely at his opponent.

“Trump’s so desperate he started reading those bibles he’s selling,” the president said. “Then he got to the first commandment: ‘You shall have no other gods before me.’ That’s when he put it down and said, ‘This book’s not for me.’”

But the president soon dispensed with the yuks and pivoted to what felt like a stump speech about the clear and present danger posed by Trump and his movement. He called on the journalists in the room to report “truth over lies.” He implored them to move past the election horse race stories and focus on American democracy. “The stakes couldn’t be higher,” he said. No punchline….

President Biden didn’t waste time.

Just minutes into his speech at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday, Mr. Biden launched into the issues dominating the 2024 election, including his age and former President Donald J. Trump’s hush-money trial in New York.

“The 2024 election’s in full swing and yes, age is an issue,” Mr. Biden said in a roughly 10-minute speech. “I’m a grown man running against a 6-year-old.”

“Donald has had a few tough days lately. You might call it ‘stormy’ weather,” Mr. Biden said, an oblique reference to Stormy Daniels, a porn actress who claims to have had sex with Mr. Trump in 2006 and received a hush-money payment in the days before the 2016 election, a deal at the center of his New York trial.

The comments, even as part of a roast, were notable given Mr. Biden has forbidden his aides to talk publicly about Mr. Trump’s legal troubles. But they also came as Mr. Biden has ramped up his attacks on Mr. Trump, sharpening the split-screen between a president on the campaign trail and a former president spending his days in a courtroom….

(But neither did Trump stories)

It DID play at CNN, MSNBC and C-SPAN last night…..

  3. I see where the Justice Dept. is recommending that marijuana be reclassified as a schedule three drug ( like ketamine and anabolic steroids) rather than a schedule one drug ( same as heroin).

    Long overdue.

  4. It looks like Ron Gunzburger is on the verge of announcing a candidacy for office in Maryland. He has the beginnings of a campaign website up and everything.

    Based on his Tweets the past few days, it sounds like he might be running as a Republican. That would not have been something I would have seen in my circa 2004 crystal ball. Perhaps, he might run as a m0oderate, pro-Hogan Democrat. We will see.

      • Good news for Shumwer and other Senate Democrats….

        AZ-Sen: Rep. Ruben Gallego (D) has a 45-43 lead on 2022 gubernatorial nominee Kari Lake (R) in an Emerson poll.

        PA-Sen: Sen. Bob Casey (D) leads David McCormick (R) 46-42 according to Emerson. The race has narrowed from 10 points in a February poll and 5 points in a March poll.

        • It’s only April, JB, and while I’m glad that the Democratic candidates to succeed Sinema and Casey are ahead of the GOP ones, a difference of only a couple of points this early only tells us that those races will be close in October and November, not who is likely to win. Keeping the U.S. Senate is still a challenge for the Democrats.

            Democrats have been going the undecided’s in the last year so I’m basing my view on that

            The Biden run is so lackluster that Democrats are hoping for EVERYTHING ELSE to help them and the top of the ticket….

            We’ll see if the Trump conviction takes a chunk out of his support….

    Almost as bizarre as her self described dog killing revelation in her new book,she apparently blatantly lied about meeting North Korean dictator Kim jong un.

    This whole episode ranks right up there with some of the dumbest political moves of modern times.l

    • I am reading this book now. I never read novels, but it is sort of interesting fairly early into it. The quasi fictional Hillary Rodham is the narrator. The book is designed to make her look good, but she should probably be upset at it. I was not expecting some of the “scenes” invoking a 1971 Bill and Hillary. I feel worse if Chelsea has to read it.

      • I voted in the D primary as I did in 2020, and was part of a successful effort this time to choose the least objectionable nominee for Cook County States’ Attorney.

        My Presidential vote was a write in for “Support Israel Joe”

  15. Democrats strongly overperform in a special election in Ohio 6th Dustrict. Trump won it 64-35 and the GOP Rep won it 67-32 in 2022.

    Tonight it was a 10 point won for the GOP.

          • You should clarify to at least one of your readers if it is ok to express the thought/concern/whatever that Joe Biden may lost to Donald Trump in November, even if you do not agree it will happen.

            Is offering that contrary opinion really allowed here? It seems to bother one person at least.

    I’ve seen nothing but some vague rumblings from a few Republicans ( very few) that they “ might” reconsider their support for him and some “ polls” showing a 1% or less “ swing.” Certainly nothing of substance to declare that his criminal conviction has had any discernible effect on the contest

    Today?

    I see no difference than several months ago.

    Way too close to call.
