More Legal one’s based on Trump’s unproven dreams of vote fraud……
Federal Judges ain’t having this so far….
The Trump administration has opened a criminal investigation in its intensifying campaign to prove thousands of noncitizens are on California’s voter rolls, issuing federal grand jury subpoenas to local election officials, according to people with knowledge of the matter and copies of subpoenas obtained by The New York Times.
The move escalates the Justice Department’s pressure on the most populous state as the administration seeks to tighten its grip on the midterm elections by making unsubstantiated claims that large numbers of illegal voters are on the rolls. A day earlier, a federal judge resoundingly rejected the Trump administration’s bid to block the state from counting the votes of some 20,000 people it says are likely noncitizens, even though studies have found such fraud is very rare.
The new subpoenas are part of the administration’s broader effort to portray elections in Democratic states as rigged against Republicans. Justice Department officials have repeatedly suggested they would investigate and prosecute local election officials who did not accede to federal demands to set aside ballots of people that the administration had identified as likely noncitizens.
The people with knowledge of the matter spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive legal matters…

Using criminal justice processes like grand jury subpoenas may allow the administration to gain access to records that it has so far failed to acquire through a lawsuit and menacing letters. Such a subpoena does not mean that the person who receives one is under investigation; the Justice Department rarely subpoenas people it intends to charge with a crime.
Dean Logan, the Los Angeles County registrar, denounced the subpoenas as “intimidation.”
“At every step, the U.S. Department of Justice has taken a confrontational, adversarial approach,” he said in a statement. “Election officials are acting in accordance with state and federal law.”….
….
The administration has repeatedly signaled that it would escalate its fight with the state….

Trump often will push things as far as he can to get what he wants….
He has struck out on several fronts to try to influence this years midterm votes….
Note…
Five days before a deeply contentious midterm election, two states are enmeshed in Justice Department investigations brought by the Trump administration, which has repeatedly sown doubts about the voting process as Republicans face stiff headwinds and a daunting electoral map.
The Justice Department began issuing dozens of subpoenas on Thursday as part of an investigation into Democrats’ effort to recruit candidates into the Alaska Senate race who would draw votes from the Republican incumbent, according to two officials with knowledge of the investigation. At the same time, the department has begun a criminal investigation involving unsubstantiated claims that large numbers of illegal voters are on California’s voter rolls….
Update….
California Gov. Newsom response to Trump’s action…..
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is warning President Trump against trying to meddle in his state’s elections amid growing concerns from Democrats over federal interference in next week’s midterms.
“A warning to Donald Trump: I’m deploying election lawyers to key battleground districts in California to protect every vote,” Newsom wrote on social platform X.
“And I just made it a FELONY to illegally seize ballots,” he added.
Newsom continued in a press release, “A federal badge is not a license to intimidate voters or interfere with an election,” before referencing a federal appeals court ruling that allowed the state to count 20,000 mail-in ballots that the Trump administration tried to say were likely from noncitizens.
The governor’s office stated in a press release that nearly 1,000 trained volunteers are slated to be stationed in California’s 6th, 13th, 22nd, 45th and 48th congressional districts on Tuesday, adding that personnel are “remaining for as long as necessary.”
