Gavin Newsom says his children will have the final say on a 2028 presidential run — and that he’s leaving the timing to “fate.”
“That moment will arrive when it arrives. You’ll know it,” the California governor told reporters on Wednesday. “There’s no such thing as a deadline.”
Newsom said his children are his “focus group” and have “veto power” in his deliberations. All four began opposed to the idea of him running, but two have “moved off the no column,” he said.
Newsom’s remarks offered the latest insight into the likely candidate’s thinking as a sprawling group of Democrats position themselves for the 2028 primary. He said he has not spoken with another potential candidate, Kamala Harris, since the airing of a CNN interview in which he said he will not run if she does.
While he said he’ll “have that conversation” with Harris, the governor stressed that his family would determine whether he will run. One of his daughters, he said, has referred to the end of his term as “Liberation Day,” hinting at his children’s reservations.
“The most important conversations are in the house, around the dinner table,” Newsom said….
