Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday that U.S. negotiators had tried to jump start diplomacy with Iran on its nuclear program through talks on the side of a United Nations summit the previous day.
The flurry of diplomacy came as Iran’s partners, the Houthis, pressed forward with their offensive in the region, as a second front widened in a conflict that began when the United States and Israel attacked Iran in February.
Mr. Rubio said that the Americans involved in the talks, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, were carrying out President Trump’s orders to continue a dialogue with Iran that prioritized persuading the country to end nuclear development involving enriching uranium.
Mr. Rubio added that Iran’s control of the Strait of Hormuz, which occurred as a result of the war, must also be addressed….

Iran’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, turned the tables on Donald Trump, describing the US as the true bully and terrorist in the Middle East while insisting that Iran had always shown a commitment to the negotiating table.
In a defiant speech to the UN general assembly in New York, his first since the US and Israel launched an all-out war on Iran, Pezeshkian repeatedly vowed that Tehran would never bend the knee to the US.
But he balanced defiance with a willingness to talk, saying: “It must be understood by President Trump and those who seek to bully us that we are ready for dialogue and diplomacy and negotiations but without the language of force.”
On Tuesday, the US president had told the UN he was weighing whether to “annihilate” Iran, but went on to hail renewed talks between Tehran and Washington’s negotiators.
A surprise three-hour meeting between Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, and the US special envoy Steve Witkoff on the sidelines of the assembly the same day was regarded as constructive by both sides. It was the first such meeting since June, but did not stop the US delegation from walking out at the start of Pezeshkian’s speech….

Chinese front companies help launder the funds, while Chinese banks route the transactions through the country’s financial plumbing, using China’s currency, to evade U.S. oversight.”
“On the battlefield, satellite imagery procured from Chinese entities has been linked by U.S. officials to an Iranian strike that killed three American troops… Chinese companies have also helped provide chemical precursors used to manufacture the types of ballistic missiles used in the attack.”
