“The steepest month-to-month drop in sentiment was among survey respondents who identify as Republicans, with their outlook now 19% below readings from just before the Iran war and at the lowest since the 2024 election.”

“Now, with midterm elections less than three months away and campaigning poised to get underway in earnest, the gap has become impossible to ignore. And there are signs that’s weighing on Trump’s Republican Party as it fights to retain control of Congress. The president’s rosy view is running into anxiety about the cost of living and fallout from the war in Iran.”

“Both moves suggest Trump remains preoccupied with his self-gratification and glorification, even though it’s increasingly likely to come at the expense of his party.”

“Polls show voters unhappy with his handling of the economy and the Iran war, the issues dominating the upcoming election. Crime, by contrast, has traditionally been an issue on which voters see Republicans as strong.”

“U.S. retail sales fell in July by the most in more than a year as consumers pulled back on purchases of autos and at online stores,” Bloomberg reports.

Even his foes grudgingly called him a political savant with an intuition for exploiting grievances that left so-called experts floundering.”
