Gavin Newsom will return to South Carolina next week, part of a four-day swing through the South that will also include visits to Alabama and North Carolina.
The trip to the first presidential primary state on the Democratic nominating calendar comes days after California lawmakers wrap up their final legislative session under Newsom. The California governor’s team said he will appear in six South Carolina counties carried by Donald Trump in 2024, meeting with voters and local leaders and campaigning for Democrats in state House races.
Newsom’s office framed the trip as an effort to counter Trump in a region where policies like the president’s plan to limit mail-in ballots will have an outsize impact. But it also serves as a way for Newsom, a likely presidential contender, to continue making inroads in a critical state..
His agenda in South Carolina, in addition to campaigning in down-ballot races, includes meeting with students at Allen University alongside state Rep. Jermaine Johnson, the longshot Democratic candidate for governor in the deep-red state. In Alabama, he is expected to appear with Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed and hold a town hall with community leaders.
Newsom has spent years traveling to the South and using his fundraising apparatus to boost Democrats in other parts of the country, including an appeal on Thursday for Democratic South Carolina governor candidate Jermaine Johnson….

The vote in the Democratic primary will be overwhelmingly Black ( about 60-70%).
Whomever Clyburn endorses will probably win .
Why the Democrats decided to make SC the first primary is beyond me.SC is one of the most unrepresentative states politically to begin with and to give that kind of power to one man is absurd.
