Border czar Tom Homan said domestic abuse allegations against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer who shot and killed a man in Maine earlier this month should have prevented him from being hired.
During Sunday’s episode of CNN’s “State of the Union,” Homan was asked about court documents that show the officer was accused of domestic violence by two ex-wives and was once ordered by a judge to relinquish his firearms. The officer has denied the allegations.
“Should someone with those issues be an ICE agent?” anchor Dana Bash asked.
Homan said it would have been “impossible” for the officer to have “cleared” ICE’s screening process if the allegations were true and the agency was provided with the correct information.
Revealing an ongoing investigation into how the officer was vetted, the border czar put several questions on the table.
“Did the vetting process fail? Was that information not available? Did they not know?” he asked.
Bash told Homan any issues with ICE’s screening process were a serious cause for concern, especially as the agency continues to ramp up hiring to support President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.
Calling whatever lapses led to the Maine officer’s employment an exception, Homan argued, “Well, look, you know, ICE has about 30,000 employees. They all go through vetting. This is kind of a rare instance, but again, it’s under review.”
While the border czar told Bash the training protocol for the agency was being reevaluated, he pushed back at Bash’s suggestion that current ICE officers’ training “wasn’t adequate.”…
