The media focus WILL be on Maine where Democrat , Graham Platner, the new ‘bad’ guy with women, W ILL win, and begin his march to defeat Republican Susan Collins….
Voters in four states will cast ballots in primaries on Tuesday, with much of the attention on the Democratic contest for the Senate in Maine, where Graham Platner is expected to prevail after a series of damaging reports about his personal history.
Mr. Platner, a political progressive and oyster farmer, upturned the state’s politics and chased the two-term governor, Janet Mills, out of the race, though her name remains on the ballot. Voters in Maine, Nevada and South Carolina will also pick candidates for governor, while Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina faces a challenge in his Republican primary.
Democrats see the Maine seat, held by Senator Susan Collins, a Republican, as crucial to their efforts to regain control of the Senate. Mr. Platner’s performance will be closely watched after reports in recent weeks regarding sexual messages he had sent to women outside his marriage and women he had dated who recounted him acting in disturbing ways.
There are other compelling races on Tuesday. In South Carolina, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette has President Trump’s endorsement in the Republican primary for governor over Representative Nancy Mace, but that contest is almost certainly headed to a runoff. In the G.O.P. Senate primary, Mr. Graham, a four-term incumbent, is hoping to avoid a runoff in a field of five challengers that includes Mark Lynch, a Greenville businessman, who has put millions of dollars of his own money into the campaign.
North Dakota is also holding elections, with its lone House member expected to win her Republican primary.
Here’s what else to know:
-
South Carolina: The race to replace the outspoken Ms. Mace in the First Congressional District has flown largely under the national radar, with a chaotic and sprawling field of Republican candidates vying for what has become a safely G.O.P. district.
-
Maine Governor: Troy Jackson, a logger and state senator endorsed by Mr. Platner, and Dr. Nirav Shah, who led Maine’s coronavirus pandemic response, are among the candidates on the Democratic side. The Republican field includes Bobby Charles, who served in the second Bush administration, and a Bush relative, Jonathan Bush, a cousin of former President George W. Bush and nephew of former President George H.W. Bush.
-
House Contests: Republicans will be nominating candidates they hope can flip seats in Maine and Nevada. Former Gov. Paul LePage of Maine is running unopposed in the Republican primary in the state’s Second District, where Representative Jared Golden, a moderate Democrat, is not seeking re-election. Marty O’Donnell, a video game music composer, has Mr. Trump’s endorsement in the Republican primary in Nevada’s Third District, where the party hopes to defeat the Democratic incumbent, Representative Susie Lee….
