President Trump said he did not care about the midterms during his Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, referring to concerns over how the Iran war will impact Republican candidates in November.
“They thought they were going to outwait me, you know, ‘we’ll outwait him, he’s got the midterms,’” Trump told reporters Wednesday.
“I don’t care about the midterms; look what happened last night, that was the prelude to the midterms,” he said, referring to the Texas Republican Senate primary runoff in which Trump’s favored candidate won big.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton defeated 24-year incumbent Sen. John Cornyn (Texas) by more than 30 points Tuesday after Trump’e endorsement of him last week. That continued a winning streak for Trump, as Cornyn is the latest high-profile Republican incumbent to lose to a Trump-backed primary challenger. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) lost to their Trump-backed primary challengers earlier this month.
While Paxton’s runoff victory is a sign of Trump’s strength with the GOP base, Trump’s comment on not caring about the midterms could spark unease within Republicans as they face an increasingly tough general election environment.
The national environment for Republicans running in the midterms appears even more difficult given the rise in inflation and high energy prices.
A poll from The Associated Press/NORC Center released last week found that around 63 percent of Republicans said they approved of Trump’s handling of the economy, down from 78 percent at the start of his second term…..

The Economist: “Donald Trump this week became the most unpopular president since our poll started in 2009. His net approval rating is -24. The war in Iran has hurt Mr Trump’s standing: his net approval rating for foreign policy is -20. But it is his handling of the economy that is really dragging him down. Three-quarters of Americans think that its condition is ‘fair’ or ‘poor’, and 63% think that it is getting worse.”
“If that doesn’t change it will hurt the Republican Party in November’s midterm elections. Our forecasting model says that the Democrats have a nine-in-ten chance of winning control of the House of Representatives. The Senate is a toss-up.”
Trump Professes Indifference Over Fallout
New York Times: “It is unlikely that the president does not actually ‘care’ about the midterms, the results of which will determine much of the success of the back half of his final term.”
“But Mr. Trump has increasingly adopted a posture of nonchalance in the face of mounting fallout on multiple fronts: an unpopular war that has dragged on longer than he said it would, the creation of a government fund that could benefit his allies, and his fixation on remaking Washington into his vision of a gilded city.”
I find that very hard to believe — otherwise he and his gang wouldn’t be applying all that MAGA and RNC pressure to force premature redistricting and the SAVE voter-suppression Act (including ending the Senate filibuster).
