President Donald Trump was uninjured and other top leaders of the United States were evacuated from an annual dinner of White House correspondents on Saturday night after an unspecified threat. There did not immediately appear to be any injuries, and one law-enforcement official said a shooter had opened fire.
Authorities said the incident occurred outside the ballroom where Trump and other guests were seated. It was not immediately clear what happened.
The Secret Service and other authorities swarmed the banquet hall at the Washington Hilton as guests dining on burrata salad ducked under tables by the hundreds.

The FBI’s Washington field office said on social media that the suspect in the shooting outside the White House correspondents’ dinner is in custody. FBI agents have responded to the Washington Hilton, where the annual dinner was taking place in a lower-level ballroom.

In his first comments following Saturday’s security incident at the White House correspondents’ dinner, President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that a “shooter has been apprehended” and that he has recommended that the night’s program commence.

Guests seen at the event before Saturday’s security incident include Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy, Education Secretary Linda McMahon, SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, acting attorney general Todd Blanche, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, FBI Director Kash Patel and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.

Speaking to reporters in the White House briefing room, President Donald Trump said one officer “was shot from very close distance with a very powerful gun and the vest did the job.” Trump said he spoke to the officer “and he’s doing great, he’s in great shape, he’s in very high spirits.”
Two law enforcement officials confirmed earlier that a Secret Service officer was shot in the chest but that a ballistic vest had stopped the bullet…

“I didn’t want to say this, but this is why we have to have all of the attributes of what we’re planning at the White House. A man armed with guns and knives stormed the lobby outside a high-profile journalists’ dinner attended by President Donald Trump and multiple senior U.S. leaders on Saturday night, rushing toward the ballroom before Secret Service agents swarmed him and took him into custody. The president was uninjured and was hustled away.
Guests went diving under tables as the scene unfolded and some reported hearing shots outside the vast subterranean ballroom in the Washington Hilton where the event was being held.
One law enforcement official said a gunman had opened fire. A law enforcement officer was shot in the bullet-resistant vest but is expected to be OK, several sources told The Associated Press.
The shooting suspect was identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press.
Security footage posted by Trump shows a man sprinting through the metal detectors and past law enforcement, who turn toward him with guns raised. Officers then swarm toward the man off-screen.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the suspect is being charged preliminarily with two charges related to using a firearm and assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon, but others could be filed later.

Shooting Suspect Was Targeting Trump
“The suspected gunman who fired shots Saturday outside the White House Correspondents’ dinner was targeting President Trump and administration officials, according to a 1,000-word document the authorities have tied to the man, 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, Calif,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“The gunman appeared to be acting alone, and had a shotgun, handgun and knives on him, officials said. Cole was a guest at the hotel where the dinner was taking place, and in the document he outlined security breaches that he said made getting firearms into the building easier than he expected.”
