Iran broadened its retaliatory attacks on American targets in the Gulf region on Monday and early Tuesday, even as President Trump and other top officials in his administration signaled that the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran now in their third day could intensify and continue for weeks or more.
As American and Israeli planes pounded targets in Iran on Monday, the fighting expanded into Lebanon, where the Iranian-allied militia Hezbollah fired rockets into Israel, prompting Israel to bombard the militia’s strongholds outside Beirut. Early Tuesday, the Israeli military said it was attacking again in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah command centers and weapons storage facilities in the capital, Beirut.
Around the same time, the United Arab Emirates’ Defense Ministry said its air defenses were “dealing with a barrage of ballistic missiles” from Iran. And within hours, the Saudi Defense Ministry said that American Embassy in Riyadh had been attacked by two drones, resulting in a “limited fire” and minor damage.
Mr. Trump, speaking at his first public event since U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran began, offered an open-ended time frame for the military campaign. “Whatever the time is, it’s OK, whatever it takes,” he said. “Right from the beginning we projected four to five weeks, but we have the capability to go far longer than that.” Later in the day, on Capitol Hill, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters that “the hardest hits are yet to come from the U.S. military.”
The Pentagon said the death toll of American service members killed in Iranian strikes had risen to six. And three American jets were shot down by Kuwaiti air defenses in what the U.S. military called an “apparent friendly fire incident.” All six crew members from the planes ejected safely and were recovered, the military said.
The New York Post reported that the president had said in an interview on Monday: “I don’t have the yips with respect to boots on the ground — like every president says, ‘There will be no boots on the ground.’ I don’t say it.”
A senior Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps official vowed on Monday that “not a single drop of oil” would pass through the Strait of Hormuz, the conduit for about one-fifth of the world’s supply. Ebrahim Jabari, an adviser to the Revolutionary Guards commander, said on Iranian state TV, that Iran would “set on fire” any ships trying to transit the strait. Traffic through the strait has already slowed to a trickle, after the Revolutionary Guards warned ships away over the weekend, but Iran had not directly threatened them.
In another sign of an expansion of attacks in the Middle East, Qatar’s Defense Ministry said its air force had shot down two Su-24 bombers coming from Iran, the first report that Iran, which has fired missiles and drones at its Gulf neighbors and Israel in retaliation for the Israeli-U.S. assault, had also sent warplanes into their airspace.
Iranian leaders remained defiant. The country’s top security official, Ali Larijani, denied news reports that Iran’s new leaders were seeking to negotiate with Washington, denouncing Mr. Trump for “delusional fantasies” and for plunging the Middle East “into chaos.” Iran, he said in a string of fiery social media posts on Monday, “has prepared itself for a long war.”
The comments from Mr. Trump and Mr. Rubio underscored the administration’s murky messaging on the Iran attack.
Speaking ahead of a classified briefing for congressional leaders in the afternoon, Mr. Rubio argued that U.S.-Israeli strikes against Iran were intended to address an “imminent threat,” but then went on to describe an attack undertaken preemptively, on the expectation that Israel would begin strikes even without the United States and that Iran would include American targets in its retaliation. He said the United States would strike Iran until it had achieved its objectives, including the destruction of Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities.
Listing those objectives at the White House earlier in the day, Mr. Trump said, “We’re destroying Iran’s missile capability, and we’re doing that hourly.” He said the strikes were “annihilating their navy,” and ensuring that “this sick and sinister regime” in Tehran “can never obtain a nuclear weapon” or continue to sponsor militant groups across the Middle East.
Here’s what we’re covering:
-
Economic fallout: Oil and natural gas markets remained highly volatile as the fighting shut down shipping routes and damaged production facilities. Naval traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, the conduit for one-fifth of the world’s oil supply, has shut down, according to shipping companies and Iranian media. And Qatar’s state-owned energy company said that it would halt production of liquefied natural gas, cutting off a large share of the world’s supply of the fuel. Read more ›
-
Death toll: More than 550 people have been killed in Iran since the beginning of the war, the Iranian Red Crescent emergency service said on Monday. The Lebanese health ministry said that at least 31 people had been killed in Israeli airstrikes. At least 10 people have been killed in Israel and six, including civilians, across the Gulf since Saturday, according to the authorities. Read more ›

Persian Gulf: Iranian missiles and drone attacks led to explosions in Iraq, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and other countries where the U.S. has military bases. Iranian leaders have said the attacks have targeted U.S. assets, but they have also struck Dubai’s international airport, hotels and other civilian and economic infrastructure…..

ISW….Iran Update Evening Special Report, March 2, 2026
- The combined US-Israeli force continued to degrade Iranian air defenses to maintain air superiority over western Iran and Tehran. US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Dan Caine announced on March 2 that “local air superiority has been established [over Iran].” The combined force’s strikes on Iranian air defense systems also enable Israel and the United States to operate lower-generation aircraft in Iran with less risk.
- The combined force launched several airstrikes on March 2 targeting Iranian internal security sites responsible for maintaining security, suppressing protests, and spreading regime propaganda.
- The combined force struck the Natanz Nuclear Facility in Esfahan Province on March 2, which marks the first attack on an Iranian nuclear site since the start of the US-Israeli campaign on February 28. An Israeli analyst, citing March 2 satellite imagery, reported that strikes targeted Natanz and severely damaged at least three buildings.
- The IDF has continued to conduct airstrikes targeting Hezbollah military sites and institutions in Lebanon on March 2 to degrade Hezbollah’s ability to conduct retaliatory attacks against Israel. The IDF reported that it struck over 70 Hezbollah weapons depots, launch sites, and launchers in southern Lebanon.
- The United States and Israel conducted several attacks targeting Iranian-backed Iraqi militias in Iraq on March 1 and 2 to degrade the militias’ ability to conduct retaliatory attacks against US forces and Israel. Iranian-backed Iraqi militias appear to be threatening to expand their attacks to regional countries that host US troops, such as Jordan.
- The Houthis could target Emirati, Israeli, or US military positions in the Horn of Africa if it joins Iran’s regional retaliatory campaign.
- Iran is attempting to disrupt international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz as part of a broader effort to impose a cost on the Gulf states. Iran likely seeks to push the Gulf states to pressure the United States and Israel to end their combined strike campaign against Iran. Iranian attacks targeting energy infrastructure in the Gulf have also disrupted some regional oil and gas industries.

U.S. troop deaths rise to six as military continues strikes on Iran
U.S. Central Command said late Monday that the number of troops killed in its operations against Iran had risen to six, after the bodies of two additional service members who had previously been unaccounted for were discovered.
There were few other details provided as to where the deaths occurred, other than that their remains had been recently recovered “from a facility that was struck during Iran’s initial attacks in the region.”

Scoop: Trump calls Kurdish leaders in Iran war effort
President Trump spoke by phone with Kurdish leaders in Iraq on Sunday to discuss the U.S.-Israel war with Iran and what might come next, three sources with knowledge of the calls told Axios.
Why it matters: The Kurds have thousands of soldiers along the Iran-Iraq border and control strategic areas that could be significant as the war develops. Iraq’s Kurds also have close ties to Iran’s Kurdish minority.
Zoom in: Trump spoke to leaders from the two main Kurdish factions in Iraq — Masoud Barzani and Bafel Talabani — a day after the Saturday bombing campaign began, two of the sources said.
- A source with knowledge of the calls said they were “sensitive” and declined to give details on their content.
- The calls were the culmination of months of behind-the-scenes lobbying by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, another source said. Israel has had close security, military and intelligence ties with the Kurds in Syria, Iraq and Iran for decades.
- “It is the general view, and certainly Netanyahu’s view, that the Kurds are going to come out of the woodwork … that they’re going to rise up,” one official said….

Britain grants U.S. permission to use military bases for strikes
In a reversal, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said his government has granted U.S. forces permission to use bases in the United Kingdom for strikes against Iran.
The about-face, two days after the United States and Israel attacked Iran, means that the Air Force can now fly missions from strategic locations, including Diego Garcia, a British air base in the Indian Ocean with long runways used by American B-52 bombers and other military aircraft….

Iranian drones buzz across the Persian Gulf after their pivotal use by Russia in Ukraine
The distinctive buzz of Iranian-designed drones has become a familiar sound in Ukraine over the past four years. Now, it’s increasingly heard across the Persian Gulf as Tehran strikes back with the cheap but effective weapons following the attack by the U.S. and Israel against Iran.
The Shahed drones have made a transformative impact on modern warfare, with Russia sending swarms of the deadly weapons into the skies above Ukraine on nightly missions.
While ballistic and cruise missiles fly much faster and pack a bigger punch, they cost millions and are available only in limited quantities. A Shahed drone costs only tens of thousands of dollars — a tiny fraction of a ballistic missile….

Following the weekend U.S. and Israeli attacks, Iran has struck Israel and also unleashed a barrage of hundreds of missiles and drones on multiple targets in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
They included U.S. bases, ports, airports, oil facilities and oil tankers, as well as some high-rise buildings.
Officials in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates said Sunday that air defenses had dealt with 165 ballistic missiles, two cruise missiles and more than 540 Iranian drones over two days. While officials said they intercepted all air attacks Saturday, debris from the knocked-down weapons sparked blazes at some of Dubai’s most iconic locations…..

Questions on Trump’s ‘authority to go to War’ should be Ignored….
They are NOT serious…
Wag the Dog:
(or let Bibi choose your wars for you)
Israel’s determination to attack Iran and the certainty that US troops would be targeted in response forced the Trump administration to take pre-emptive strikes, the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, said, in a new explanation for Washington’s surprise entry into the conflict….
