There is a curious polling phenomenon where a nontrivial share of respondents falsely claim to have voted for the winner of the last election. Whether they’re lying, misremembering, or rewriting history, “winner’s recall” is common enough that many reputable pollsters have observed it in past elections.

In our national polling of registered voters, though, we’re finding something different: a nontrivial chunk of people who are mad at Trump seem to suddenly have amnesia and no longer admit to having voted for him in 2024.

Voters abandoning the winning candidate is a pretty big reversal of a well-established phenomenon. But we now have enough data to suggest that it’s both real and the direct result of Trump’s unpopularity.

Let’s back up for a second. How do we even know who people voted for in the first place?

The day after the 2024 election, our polling partner Verasight collected data from every respondent in its panel about whom they voted for. For each new recruit who joined its pool post-2024, it asked for 2024 vote choice as part of the signup process.

In other words, a respondent’s 2024 vote is recorded as part of their profile at a time when it was fresh in their memory. As Nate Cohn of The New York Times explained, this kind of logging of past vote is more reliable (and significantly less noisy) than asking someone who they voted for months (or even years) down the line.1

But every survey, we also separately ask respondents whom they voted for so that we can see how people’s responses and memories drift and diverge from reality over time.

Here’s what we’re finding: six percent of Trump voters — as determined by the recorded vote data we have, which we’ll treat as the ground truth — don’t even admit to voting for him in the last election….

So we know that if a Trump voter disapproves of Trump, they’re more likely to (incorrectly) say they never voted for him in the first place….

You can imagine that at the start of his second term, when his political strength was arguably at its peak, this effect would have inflated Trump’s recalled vote share quite a bit. Now, the effect is the opposite; with the president’s approval rating sitting at a whopping -15 points in our most recent poll, there is no appetite among the electorate to align with Trump….

  2. Federal agents executed search warrants Wednesday at the headquarters of the Los Angeles Unified School District and the home of Superintendent Albert Carvalho, significantly escalating the Trump administration’s fight against the nation’s second-largest school district.

    The FBI conducted the raids on the 24th floor of LAUSD’s headquarters and Carvalho’s home in LA’s San Pedro neighborhood, a vibrant waterfront area, according to Fox 11. The nature of the investigation is currently unclear. LAUSD and Carvalho have yet to address the situation.

    FBI agents could be seen going in and out of Carvalho’s home carrying items in boxes. Carvalho has been LAUSD superintendent since 2022 and was re-appointed to the role this past September. The affidavit for the search warrants are currently under seal, so it is unknown if Carvalho is personally a target of the investigation.

    Last week, the Trump administration moved to intervene in a civil rights lawsuit against LAUSD for alleged racial discrimination tied to a program that prioritized funding for schools with lower amounts of white students. The lawsuit was brought by the 1776 Foundation, a conservative group active in K-12 education policy and school board races.

    The district has also clashed with the Trump administration over immigration enforcement efforts in the area. Carvalho, who himself came to the U.S. illegally, has accused Immigration and Customs Enforcement of acting in a way that is “immoral, unethical, and illegal.”

    “Despite the injustice. Despite the fear. Despite the pressure. Despite the unbearable lack of humanity. Our kids are soaring,” Carvalho said during a news conference last year. “And for the second year in a row, these students have provided best-in-class achievement across all grade levels.”….

    Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) said Wednesday that a bridge between the U.S. and Canada that President Trump previously threatened to block from opening is set to go ahead.

    “For the first time in over a century, a new bridge connecting Michigan to Canada, the Gordie Howe International Bridge, will open,” the governor declared during the Michigan State of the State address.

  4. The Green Party won a special election on Thursday for a British parliamentary seat in northern England, where left-leaning voters sent Prime Minister Keir Starmer a searing message of dissatisfaction.

    Hannah Spencer, 34, a plumber by trade and a member of the area’s local council, won the seat in a district called Gorton and Denton, southeast of Manchester, England, with 14,980 votes, or about 41 percent of the vote. She will become the Green Party’s fifth lawmaker in the British Parliament.

    Mr. Starmer’s Labour Party came in third, behind Reform U.K., a right-wing populist party that campaigns against immigration. It was a remarkable setback for Labour, which had represented the local area for generations.

    Reform received 10,578 votes, or about 29 percent, while Labour received 9,364 votes, or about 25 percent, underscoring a wider fracturing in British politics.

    In a victory speech just after 4:30 a.m. local time, Ms. Spencer credited her decisive win to her focus on cost-of-living issues, inequality and the environment. And she chided — without naming them — politicians who attempted to divide people along race and religious lines.

    “I can’t and won’t accept this victory tonight without calling out the politicians and divisive figures who constantly scapegoat and blame our communities for all the problems in society,” she said. “My Muslim friends and neighbors are just like me — human.”

    Her party leader, Zack Polanski, told the BBC that, by electing the Green candidate, voters showed that they wanted “an alternative to this failing Labour government.”

    Mr. Starmer had argued that only Labour was positioned to stop the rise of Reform, which has led national polls consistently for almost a year. In Parliament on Wednesday, Mr. Starmer said, “Anybody who wants to stand against that hatred and division should vote Labour.”

    But many left-leaning voters appear to have ignored that appeal, and in the election on Thursday, they gave their support to Ms. Spencer, a charismatic candidate who brought social media savvy and energy to the Green campaign.

    Reform’s failure to win the seat, where its supporters campaigned hard, will have been a disappointment for the party. Its leader, Nigel Farage, an ally of President Trump who has turned the insurgent party into a powerful force in British politics, blamed the outcome on “sectarian voting and cheating,” without providing evidence….

  6. TX-Sen: A University of Texas poll has Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D) with a solid lead on state Rep. James Talarico (D) in the Democratic primary. Crockett leads 56-44 in the poll. The poll also has AG Ken Paxton (R) leading Sen. John Cornyn (R) 36-34 with Rep. Wesley Hunt (R) at 26%.

    • PA-Gov: Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) has a comfortable 55-37 lead on State Treasurer Stacy Garrity (R) in a new Quinnipiac poll.

      FL-Gov: Casey DeSantis (R) has taken none of the steps one would expect of a large-state Gov candidate by this point in the year, so I’m not sure why outfits continue to poll her, but she’d trail Rep. Byron Donalds (R) only 28-24 in the GOP primary if she did run. That’s impressive considering Donalds has been in the race over a year, but he still seems likely to glide to the nomination in August.

      • The amount I will be rooting for a liberal Democrat like Talarico on Tuesday, whom I probably disagree on over 75 percent of things with, genuinely scares me.

        Then, I will have to to some more soul-searching to determine which downballot Democrats I will vote for in some of my state’s races in the March 17 primary. I will be voting for Raja for Senate in the primary by default. At least in the general election, the Democrats win in Illinois without much of a fight so I can do some creative write-ins then.

        The House Ethics Committee announced Monday that it is looking into allegations Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) over-billed her congressional office for funds to maintain her home in D.C.

        Why it matters: The charges, which Mace’s lawyer called “fundamentally flawed,” could add further mayhem to her bid for governor of South Carolina.

        Mace has built a national profile for making heated public statements and picking fights with both political rivals and other individuals who she says have wronged her.

        Last November she reportedly berated officers at the Charleston International Airport, which she has denied.

        Driving the news: The Ethics Committee said in a press release that it is reviewing an Office of Congressional Conduct report into allegations that Mace engaged in “improper reimbursement practices.”…..

        • Nancy Mace has major emotional and mental problems in my view.

          She has run through several staffs who all have made similar observations upon departure.

          She is involved with legal proceedings involving her ex fiancé.

          Now this.

          However, despite all her problems,she is a candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor and is considered a leading contender.

  12. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) went absolutely off at Kristi Noem today while she was testifying. It is remarkable to watch. It is amazing the freedom that politicians have when they have made the decision to not run again. So many others will remain cowards but likely were privately cheering Tillis on.

    • Yeah I saw that.Kennedy also gave her a rough time,although in a more low key fashion.

      Besides being a looker?I never have seen much to Noem and she’s done nothing in her present position to change my opinion of her.

      The rumor line is of course that she’s having a romance with Corey Lewandowski and Trump is telling those who want her gone that his appointment of her was as a favor to his former aide.

        • There is an article out that states that Trump became more inclined to pick her for DHS because she shot her puppy and wrote about in her book. He admired that about her, even as some around him expressed concern.

          At the time, people said it would totally sink her political future, but I expressed the belief that she told that story, or perhaps even invented that story, specifically to appeal to Donald Trump.

    Trump rightfully declared that he is MAGA and decides who can be part of his club.

    Tucker who once declared his “ passionate hatred” for Trump announced that no matter what Trump thought of him he would always “ love” Trump.

    It was all quite touching.

                • I understand what James was trying to say — but I would have said less and in a much better way — but I agree with Jack and not with JB’s defensive tantrum.

                  You can’t ask Americans to “get over” 9/11 or December 7th, 1941.

                  You can say that the genocide and ethnic cleansing in Gaza and the West Bank are wildly disproportionate to what Hamas did — but not necessarily to what Hamas might have done had it had the capacity, aircraft and bombs that Israel has, since I don’t doubt that Hamas wouldn’t have stopped at anything to drive nearly every Jew out of the Holy Land.

                  But I doubt that James would tell Palestinians five years from now to get over the complete and unfocussed devastation and death that is being rained on them now.

                  It’s not like telling Americans to “get over” the sinking of the Lusitania or the Maine or the British impressment of American sailors.
