iOS 26 Adoption Hits 50%, But Some Users Are Still Reluctant to Update
Nevertheless, the survey highlights key reasons as to why some users have still not upgraded. 24.2% of respondents said they were concerned that iOS 26 could negatively affect battery life, while 23.8% worried about overall performance. 17.5% of respondents said they disliked the design changes debuted with Liquid Glass, or found it harder to read, while an additional 8.6% said they were frustrated that new visual elements could not be fully turned off. 15% of respondents said they worried it would be difficult or impossible to revert to an earlier version of iOS once iOS 26 was installed, while 11.4% cited reports of bugs or features breaking as a reason for hesitation….
…
29.32% of users are running iOS 26. The update was officially released on September 15, 2025, and adoption rates are still increasing as more users install the new operating system.
- Data source: The market share statistics come from TelemetryDeck, a service that collects data from app transactions and usage.
- Version number change: With the 2025 releases, Apple changed its naming convention for operating systems to use the year. This is why the latest iOS jumps from version 18 to 26, to align it with macOS 26 and other new platforms.
- Combined figures: The TelemetryDeck data reports iOS 26’s percentage as a combined value with iOS 19, which existed in development environments. At the time of reporting, iOS 26 made up over 99% of this combined figure.
- Previous version performance: For comparison, iOS 18’s adoption peaked at over 87% in late August 2025, a year after its release….

Apple noticed low adoption / is strong arming iOS 26+
in the iOS 12.5.8, iOS 15.8.6, and iOS 18.7.4 release notes, Apple says:
This update extends the certificate required by features such as iMessage, FaceTime, and device activation to continue working after January 2027.

The implications of this update are insane and scummy tbh. essentially anyone on a device that can support iOS 26 will be forced to update to a later version by January 2027 or apple services will stop working. And you can’t update to these newest versions with latest certificate *unless* you have a device that only goes up to 12/15/18 geez.
So if you’re staying behind purposefully on say iOS 18, even the last one you could grab 18.7.3, you only have a year before you can either OTA to some extended support EOL iOS 26 security update or presumably iOS 27 by then since we are talking about Jan 2027 deadline

I’m on a iMac doing this blog….
I have also NOT updated to Tahoe….
You are also cautioned NOT to update into that system for now either for Mac….
Dont update to MacOS Tahoe until you absolutely must. This happens with almost every new macOS version, it breaks stuff until software devs can catch up. On a critical work machine, its better to stay at least one macOS version behind the curve IME.Sep 17, 2025
