Ninety Palestinians were to be released from Israeli prisons on Sunday, the first of 734 expected to be released.
The ceasefire was delayed by almost three hours on Sunday when Hamas failed to provide the list of the hostages it would release on the first day. During that delay, Gaza’s Civil Defense said, at least 19 people were killed as Israeli warplanes carried out strikes across the Gaza Strip. The names eventually were provided. The ceasefire has appeared to hold, with no reports of fighting.
President Joe Biden lauded the beginning of a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, saying, “today the guns in Gaza have gone silent.”
In remarks Sunday morning, on his last full day in office, Biden offered perhaps another defense of his support of Israel, amid months of criticism as Palestinian deaths mounted….

The Trump team’s participation “has been absolutely critical in getting this deal over the line,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters Wednesday, noting that Biden’s term would expire in five days. “It’s critical that all of the parties to the agreement and the other mediators see that when the United States is in the room making commitments, those are lasting commitments that extend beyond this administration into the next one.”…
