As was the case with Hezbollah in Lebanon?
Expect the Israeli military to KEEP up attacks up until the last minute before the cease-fire…
This agreement IS going to cost the Israeli Prime Minister Rightwingnut support, even as the hostage families and Palestians celebrate …
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that a deal to return hostages held in the Gaza Strip has been reached. The announcement early came a day after Netanyahu’s office said there were last minute snags in talks to free hostages in return for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of Palestinian prisoners.
Netanyahu said he will convene his security Cabinet on Friday and then the government to approve the ceasefire agreement.
What to know:
- Why the hold up? The Israeli Cabinet was expected to vote on the deal Thursday, but Netanyahu’s office said they wouldn’t meet until Hamas backed down, accusing it of reneging on parts of the agreement in an attempt to gain further concessions, without elaborating.
- What would the deal mean for the war? The agreement would bring relief to the hard-hit Gaza Strip, where Israel’s offensive has reduced large areas to rubble and displaced around 90% of the population of 2.3 million, many at risk of famine.
….
No plan for the day after
The rubble clearance and eventual rebuilding of homes will require billions of dollars and the ability to bring construction materials and heavy equipment into the territory — neither of which are assured.
The ceasefire and hostage deal doesn’t say whether Israel and Egypt will lift a blockade on Gaza they imposed when Hamas seized power in 2007.
International donors are unlikely to invest in an ungoverned territory that has seen five wars in less than two decades, which means the sprawling tent camps along the coast could become a permanent feature of life in Gaza.

The Israeli cabinet will vote on the ceasefire-hostage agreement on January 17 after it postponed its vote due to delays in Hamas approving an unresolved issue. Both sides resolved the issue.
