Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the 82-year-old progressive icon, announced on Monday that he will run for re-election.
Why it matters: Sanders would continue to be the top progressive voice on Capitol Hill as Congress confronts massive policy battles over taxes and navigates social unrest over the Israel-Hamas war.
- People around Sanders have not given any indication that he is retiring, and say they are approaching 2024 as an election year for the senator.
- There was doubt that Sanders would seek re-election given his age, and he has yet to publicly announce a decision. He has until May 30 to file for re-election.
