Former President Donald J. Trump, the Republican presidential front-runner whose efforts to cling to power after his defeat shook American democracy, is set on Tuesday to make his first appearance in a Florida courtroom to face federal criminal charges that he illegally retained defense secrets and obstructed justice.
Mr. Trump, the first president, former or current, to be indicted by a grand jury in the country’s 247-year history, was to be escorted into a 13th-floor courtroom at the Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. U.S. Courthouse in downtown Miami shortly after 3 p.m.
In the 37-count indictment unsealed Friday, the former president was described as showing off classified information to visitors, haphazardly storing boxes of secret papers around Mar-a-Lago, his Florida estate, and lying to and obstructing federal investigators.
-
It was unclear whether the public would get a glimpse of Mr. Trump at the courthouse. The former president was expected to enter and exit through an underground garage. No photographs or cameras are allowed in the courtroom.
-
His appearance will include an arraignment during which Mr. Trump will enter a plea; he is expected to plead not guilty.
-
A magistrate judge, Jonathan Goodman, will oversee the hearing on Tuesday. Magistrate judges typically handle many of the routine and procedural aspects of court cases. Judge Aileen M. Cannon, a Trump appointee, has been assigned to oversee the trial.
-
Security at the courthouse was tight, and officials were bracing for a potentially unruly scene that could draw thousands of protesters. Mr. Trump called for his supporters to rally at the courthouse in his defense: “SEE YOU IN MIAMI ON TUESDAY!!!” he posted on Truth Social. But as of Tuesday morning, there were far more members of the news media than Trump supporters assembled outside the courthouse.
-
After the court appearance, Mr. Trump was expected to fly to Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., to give remarks defending himself in the evening….
On Tuesday, for the second time in a little over two months, former President Donald J. Trump will turn himself in for arrest. But it is unclear how many of the rituals of a normal arrest he will be subject to.
He is expected to be advised of his rights, and a judge will assess whether he has legal representation. Mr. Trump is expected to plead not guilty.
Normally, defendants in criminal cases are fingerprinted and photographed to help identify them. But when Mr. Trump was arraigned on unrelated state charges in New York in April, officials felt a mug shot was unnecessary given the former president’s level of fame. They did take his fingerprints, though.
It is possible that either or both steps could happen in Miami on Tuesday, but there has been no confirmation. Mr. Trump also could have to surrender his passport.
If Mr. Trump does have a mug shot taken, it will almost certainly be released under Florida’s public disclosure laws: Certain current and former officials are exempt, but there is no exemption for the president. In April, Mr. Trump’s campaign used a fake mug shot for fund-raising purposes.
A judge on Monday barred reporters from bringing cellphones or laptops into the courthouse, effectively limiting them to using pen and paper….
Note….
Andrew Weissman @ MSNBC s wondering if the Fed’s could be holding stuff for a New Jersey indictemnt if they have problems with the Florida Federal judge in the case…..

Just saw Miami Mayor aka Ponzi Postalita Francis Suarez outside the Trump arraignment and asked why he is here and not addressing the FBI investigation on the bribes he took to advance developer projects. Miami Police pushed me against a wall despite me being peaceful.
