    • Happy New Year !!!

      We always say what we wish (with little foundation): that the new year will be better, or at least more bearable, than the past year — but that often proves to be wrong (for example, I remember we young socialists thought that about 1972 compared to 1971).

      And of course, 2023 could go either way — for example, Ukraine finally establishes her independence of Russia, or Putin, with the aid of fellow authoritarians in Tehran, New Delhi and Beijing, gets most of what he wants.

      Or else: Kevin McCarthy establishes himself as the new Joe Cannon, or gets paralyzed by battles within the Republican Conference, or caves in to the crazies.
      [What happens in many state legislatures, like New York’s, is wildly improbable in the USHR — a speaker (such as McCarthy) winning his job by crossing the aisle to get at least some bipartisan support.]

      Or Joe Biden triumphs (and gets above water in approval polls), or Biden (like Carter, Clinton and Obama) is hamstrung, fails and loses the support he has now.

  6. With the 24 GOP nomination battle potentially coming down to a draw and raw slugfest betwixt DeSantis and Trump, who wants to join me in scouting out for the compromise choice. I say old, angry, not Trump, and decades out of the public eye.

        That IS my feeling…..

        I’ll stick with DeSantis , who I think right now is leaning to far to right for the general election but COULD every well take the nomination due top Trump loss of juice and legal problems this year….

          Rhode Island has never got higher on a national ticket than the VP candidates for the Prohibition Party in 1900 (Henry Metcalf, 1.5% and 3rd place with John Wooley for Pres.) and for the [Henry Wallace] Progressive Party in 1952 (Charlotta Bass. 0.23% and 3rd place with Vincent Hallinan for Pres.)

          How about our neighboring island just west of Block Island?

          By the way, before Pres. Trump moved his address, the far larger state of Florida had similar bad luck in getting a Floridian onto a national ticket, I’m not sure why (people from Ohio, New York and California appear partly because of their large proportions of convention and electoral votes. Florida is now the third-most-populous state in the country, and she’s been a swing state since 1992. But Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and Bill Nelson couldn’t get even a nomination for VP.)

            • Pardon me, sir, but I have long been proud of the state where I have lived for most of my life: Rhode Island, first to declare independence of the British king on 4 May 1776 and last of the 13 founding states to ratify the Constitution.

          • Delaware and Georgia may not be king among states that mint Presidents, but they did give us the two greatest Presidents of at least the last half century.

            • While Vermont sired Calvin Coolidge*, New Hampshire gave us Franklin Pierce. and the Keystone State of Pennsylvania produced James Buchanan.

              *Howard Dean and Bernie Sanders were immigrants from New York, and Coolidge became governor of Massachusetts, as the Virginian T. Woodrow Wilson had been governor of New Jersey.

  8. James, the section of your sidebar which lists the most recent comments is just a scramble of HTML or XML code right now, with text squeezed in between. I don’t know why this might be (unless it’s just how my Chrome browser is reading things), so maybe you can check with your tech gurus.

  10. I find it amusing that on the eve of MLK Day some media outlets are expressing surprise that a majority of Republicans oppose the holiday.

    I mean really?

    Why in the world would anybody be “surprised” by that?

      Some American Italians are resentful of the historical correction of Christopher Columbus ‘voyage’discovering and his vist’s actual result in ‘America’…

        He DOES try to balance Biden and Trump’s csaase to a degree but only lightly touches on what I feel is probably gonna be a problem for Trump….

        Trump REFUSED to produce ANYTHING for about a 1/2 year….
        TRhat making a judge OK a search warren for the home of ex-President who obviously had someone give his ass up…

        AFTER the FBI walked passed the Secret Service people to recover stuff?
        And the lawyer’s attested that was NO MORE stuff?
        More stuff was found?

        Now we have the FBI asking a judge to have the Trump lawyers turn over the names of those qwho did the ‘search’ for the second batch of stuff….

        The FBI DID return some personal Trump papers….

        But Trump has NOT relented in saying in public that he has doen nothin g wrong and wants ALL the asuff taken BACK….

        The ‘he can declassify anything by just waving a wand’ has dropped out of view already…

        It has also been pointed out that high level government offical’s generally KEEP their security clearances on a ‘need to know ‘ status…..

        From what I read ALL former President’s and high level officals security clerances are put ‘on hold’ whne they leave the govt….

        This is done by the Intel community , the DNI I would think….

        BUT….

        Biden DID shut down ANY up to date intel breifing for Trump after he got in office saying intelligence going to Trump could be compromised…

        Remember ….

        There ARE examples of Trump blabbing out ‘classified stuff’ in pressers…

        Biden has NO such history as VP or President or in the Senate where he also got Intel briefings for years…

    The California State Bar is Seeking to disbar Republican lawyer John Eastman who led Trumps efforts to overturn the 2020 election..

    Republican Congressman Troy Nehis ,one of those Texas kooks, says if Trump called Putin the Ukrainian matter would be quickly settled.

    Arizona Republican legislators approved a measure allowing them to delete emails and text messages after 90 days.Guess the crooks don’t want to leave a paper trial of their kooky garbage.

    Trump says the Trump”organization can’t be sued because it doesnt exist,thus solidifying his position as the Biggest Liar in the Country.

    Republican hoodlum Julian Khater ,who assaulted numerous Capitol police officers during the Republican terrorist attack of Jan 6 ,has been sentenced to six years imprisonment.

    The Republican National Committee passed a resolution condemning Kanye West and Nick Fuentes,former dinner guests of Republican Party leader Donald Trump.No mention of Trump however.

    Republican Rep.James Comer wants to hold hearings on Directtvs decision to drop the pro Republican Newsmax network From its roster .Why an “investigation?”Doesnt this “conservative “ believe in the”free enterprise” system?

The RNC, in excluding DJT from its condemnation of dinner with racists, is following an old Stuart precedent: The King could do no wrong (treasonous and disloyal to suggest anything else) but was being led astray by his “evil advisors”, such as the Duke of Buckingham and the Earl of Strafford, who were impeached by the House of Commons and sometimes executed.

    But then Donald Trump is notorious for claiming credit for everything good he’s done (with the weird exception of the lifesaving Operation Warp Speed, for which his bitterest foes, including me, have to give him credit) and blaming some scapegoat in the Deep State or some disloyal former “friend” (see Jeff Sessions, James Comey, even Mike Pence) for his disastrous failures and betrayals.
