Jonathan Last gives several reasons why HE thinks prosecuting ex-President Donald Trump is a bad thing…
Last thinks no matter what Trump is gonna screw things up in the end…
He’s right on that….
Mostly EVERYTHING Donald Trump touches ‘turns to shit’…
This Dog see’s no alternative than to charge Trump and take him to court….
(Which IS gonna happen is some way)
To NOT go after the man for a multitude of illegal and criminal actions just CANNOT happen…
The signal sent to Trump, Republicans and EVERYONE else is the guy IS qualified to BE President again….
‘Crime DOES play’ and being the President gets ya off the hook…
Rich guys can do what the fuck they want and get away with it….
If your are the President?
You tell people to use violence to try and keep you in office, wink at them , and the Fed’s won’t do anything?
Politics ‘trumps’ the law?…..
Once Trump says he’s running again (he ain’t doing shit) the cops have to stop going after him?…
Trump can go after ‘his’ political enemies….
But the Government can’t , won’t go after him?
The Last piece IS pure Bull Shit….
Donald Trump has been disregarding the rules, law and everything else for decades….
The Federal and even State Government SHOULD be on his case just like like EVERYONE else….
The FBI and Justice Dept. ARE gonna put together the best and most important case of their lives to get Trump, Yes an ex-President….
In the end I see Trump being found guilty on several charges….
The Feds have several criminal cases under review, The Manhattan DA has one, The Fulton Country , Ga. probably also)
Will he ever go to jail?
A 77 year rich ex-President isn’t gonna ‘do time’ in any common jail….
I see guilty verdicts as a another political/legal dance that will culminate in Trump NEVER being President again and giving up a boat load of money….Maybe losing his palace guards that u and me pay for….
And the humility of having to tell a judge ‘Yea…I fucked up’ to cement the deal….
Here’s the Last piece summary….
Jonathan Last sees three options for the Justice Department to act on the January 6 Committee referrals against Donald Trump:
- The government chooses not to prosecute: which incentivizes future attempts to overturn elections and legitimizes the stoking of political violence.
- The government prosecutes and loses: which both legitimizes the stoking of political violence and antagonizes the passions of more than a third of the country.
- The government prosecutes and wins: which creates open season for using the government to pursue political enemies, throws the 2024 Republican primary into disarray, and turns Trump into a martyr for his movement.
His conclusion: “There is no happy ending here, no scenario in which a rough comity returns to our political life. In every path, the danger to democracy increases.”
