“The leak of a draft opinion has done irreparable damage to the Supreme Court, Justice Clarence Thomas said at a conference in Dallas on Friday night, adding that it had destroyed trust among the members of the court,” the New York Times reports.
Said Thomas: “Look where we are, where that trust or that belief is gone forever. And when you lose that trust, especially in the institution that I’m in, it changes the institution fundamentally. You begin to look over your shoulder.”
I m not a fan of Clarence Thomas
But his remark wasn’t “stupid.”
For sure there will be repercussions from this and I understand what he is saying.
The Republicans ARE seeking to make the ‘leak’ as the topic of conversation against a groundswell of outcry’s against the court’s upcoming decision ….
‘Leaks’ while not wanted?
Are in fact ‘normal’….
The court is NOT above taking hits for things they do …
Thomas is the last operson to complain…
His wife’s comments he wants to NOT limit….
People complaining about an upcoming court handown is part of the way a ‘Free’ country operates….
This call from the High Court IS it’s most important in a LONG time…
Call’s for extensive probes seem to be subsiding….
Thomas has been under intense pressue to quit….
It would serve him well…..
Comments like this do him no favours….
Unless Clarence or one his clerks leaked it to box in Roberts.

There was nothing “ stupid” about what Thomas said. Actually he’s probably right. Something like this in such an emotionally charged issue will,for a time at least, likely cause some tensions among the “ brethren” and the staff.
“ Stupid,” in my view, is reserved for some politician making a totally inaccurate statement ,a wild conspiracy theory ,or an out and out lie.
Apparently ,in your view, it simply means anyone who disagrees with you.

No hit that I can see, Clarence is right that this act does hurt the Court’s reputation. My point it was already in the toilet from things that he has done unrelated to any leak.
A million years ago my old boss wanted to codify into law a list of regulations that the Justices had to follow to include their spouses. He wanted to include term limits.
How different the Court would look if that had happened.

NEW: Clarence Thomas, decrying the Roe leak, just said, “I wonder how long we’re going to have these institutions at the rate we’re undermining them,” which is an interesting comment for someone whose wife was at the Stop the Steal rally on January 6.
