Local politics with a national focus….
Two primary contests on Tuesday for open House seats in Ohio will act as a stress test for both Democrats and Republicans, offering early hints about whether party leaders are aligned with their voters ahead of the midterm elections next year.
In the Cleveland area, two Democrats are locked in an increasingly embittered and expensive clash that has become a flash point in the larger struggle between the party’s activist left flank and its leadership in Washington. The early favorite to win, Nina Turner, is now trying to hold back Shontel Brown, the preferred candidate of more establishment-friendly politicians and allied outside groups.
Ms. Turner, a former state senator who built a national following as a surrogate for Senator Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaigns, has been buoyed by support from Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and other leaders in the progressive movement. But Ms. Brown, a local Democratic Party official, has benefited from the help of Hillary Clinton, Representative James E. Clyburn of South Carolina and others in party leadership roles.
In the other race, near Columbus, a dense field of Republicans is vying to upset the preferred candidate of former President Donald J. Trump, an energy lobbyist named Mike Carey who was largely unknown until Mr. Trump endorsed him in early June and all but ensured that he would be the front-runner….
…
Mr. Trump and his allied political groups are hoping to avoid another loss after the defeat last week of a Trump-backed House candidate in Texas. In that race, a state representative, Jake Ellzey, beat Susan Wright, the widow of Representative Ron Wright, who held the seat until he died in February after battling lung cancer and being hospitalized for Covid-19….

With very early returns in Franklin Co., it’s clear state Rep. Allison Russo (D) has won the Dem primary in #OH15. It’s an uphill battle for her in a Trump +14 district, but if she outperforms Biden at all, it would be a decent sign for Dems midway to the midterms.…

I just sent Russo $118 for luck, she’s actually a good candidate running against a greedy little Republican who has helped to destroy the environment.
Brown’s win in Cleveland was sweet, shows how Biden is in charge. The Cleveland boy I married delivered most of his Republican (ex-Republican) family members to the polls and our friends followed. He also raised some serious cash for Brown.
We’re pleased.
I see our friend Corey had a very long lunch hour today, about 12 hours. He appears to find those sex scandals irresistible unless they involve drunken preppy molesters who get appointed to a lifetime spot on the Supreme Court. In that case there is nothing to see, unless the Republicans suppress the investigation.

The Democratic party voters like the pragmatic MIDDLE…..
Been saying that here for quite awhile….

To be fair I’d consider Shontel Brown to be to the left of center. A good fit for her district. Turner was simply too combative. As for the other primary, well it was pretty much closed to the GOP from what I understand so no surprise who won that one.
Keith says
Shontel is left of center and has a lot to learn. This, from everyone I talked to, was a vote against Nina.
Her rhetoric in both 16 and last year made her unacceptable.
Barney Frank is celebrating this morning.

Projection:
Shontel Brown is the Projected Winner in the #OH11 Special Democratic Primary. She will defeat Fmr State Senator Nina Turner.

Off the top of my head, I thought that district was closer.
If it was Trump plus 14, will not be much of a problem for Republicans to hold.
(waiting for my copy of The Almanac of American Politics to arrive any day now hopefully)

Shontel Brown has defeated Nina Turner in the OH 11 primary. This is a big win for establishment Democrats against Bernie Sanders/Squad ally Turner. The CBC had been very vocal about wanting to keep Turner out of Congress.
Nina Turner had described her decision to reluctantly vote for Joe Biden last November as “eating sh%^” I can sort of relate to her on that at least.
CG says
Twitter source is now somewhat nervous on the call as Turner is now doing better than expected in some places?

Looks like Trump’s choice wins 11 way Republican primary in Ohio 15,
An 11 way primary. One would think it would be impossible for a Trump choice to not win that. He certainly is not going to win a majority of the primary vote.
This general election in November might be watched as an early test battle for 2022.
CG says
Nina Turner blames her loss on “evil money.”
Pretty obvious what she meant by that.

Media throw down on Progressives in Politico….
The Democratic establishment dealt a crushing blow to the progressive movement Tuesday, when Shontel Brown, the preferred candidate of party stalwarts, triumphed over Nina Turner, a face of the insurgent left, in a special congressional primary election.
Turner conceded shortly after 10 p.m. with a biblical reference: “On this night, we will not cross the river.” She trailed Brown 51 percent to 44 percent when The Associated Press called the race….

Establishment one won last night. I was happy to see Turner loser.
However, the far-left political insurgents have won a bunch of primaries as well in the last few cycles in places like New York, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, etc.
There will be a ton of primaries in 2022 and the establishment will not be able to put all its weight in at every possible place.
