Forty-one candidates have met the qualifications to run in the California gubernatorial recall election, less than a third of the number who ran in the state’s memorable 2003 contest and well below what some political experts months ago had predicted, according to an official list released Saturday night.
Republicans comprise roughly half the field with 21 candidates, ranging from former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer to reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner. Conservative talk show host Larry Elder did not appear on the list, which suggests his paperwork did not meet all of the qualifications, but he said later that “I fully expect to be on the final certified list of candidates” that will be released Wednesday….

Recall ballots will land in mailboxes starting Aug. 16 ahead of the Sept. 14 election. The ballot will ask voters if they want to recall Newsom, and if so, who should replace him. Newsom cannot appear on the list of replacement candidates, but if voters reject the recall, that list becomes moot….
All these “mail in” ballots?
The question is which Republican(s) will declare “vote fraud” if they don’t win.

He will survive the Recall vote and I think it would be unlikely a Republican wins in 2022, but beyond that things are not looking “good” for Newsom.

Much, much too close for comfort or complacency.
Especially as a governor inevitably confronts events that can turn on a dime or drop unexpectedly from nowhere. While his or her challengers can waffle or temporise (e.g. Chas Evans Hughes on intervention in 1916), an executive must act in real time.
Gavin’s popularity is a mile wide and an inch deep. It could crack, but most likely not with this group of misfits running to replace him.
First thing the Legislature needs to do is raise the number of signatures needed to trigger a recall.
Gavin is for many reasons unpopular because, I suspect, people have pegged him as a phony. But is spite of that he will most likely survive the recall unless the virus spikes again because a bunch of uneducated asshole Republicans still refuse to get vaccinated.
I look forward to voting for a qualified Democrat to replace Gavin next year. But, he won’t be replaced by a Republican.
People started collecting signatures for a recall petition the moment Gavin was sworn in as they looked for a reason to recall him. My position, being an entitled jerk doesn’t count. These were paid signature collectors and couldn’t even tell you why Gavin should be recalled, when, of course, I could.
This process has been terribly abused by Republicans over the years. But, their attack on Democracy continues.
And after I vote no on the recall I plan to vote for Jenner just to underscore how ridiculous the whole process has become.

There were Democrats on the left in 1966 who were so upset with Gov. Edmund G. “Pat” Brown, Sr (Jerry’s dad) that they voted for Reagan. We suffered eight years of Reagan as governor followed by another eight of his as President.
