The days of media front pages of protest’s against police and police brutality are gone….
The front pages stories of protest’s from the left and the right are gone….
Media reports of rising violence and crime have replaced them across the country….
Progressives rallied on the cries of ‘Defend the Police’….
That was then….
The Defund thing has dropped dead….
The cops last year made tons of overtime…
A good many retired with that money….
And?
Voters increasingly are lined up FOR more police protection….
(Law and Order? in the ‘Big Apple’)
That is what is happening in the New York City Mayoral primary voting that just started…
Crime…
And…
The NYPD…..
IS a major issue on voters minds….
Democratic voters folks….
A year ago, the left wing of New York’s Democratic Party was ascendant. Deeply progressive candidates triumphed in state legislative primaries and won a congressional upset, activists fueled a movement to rein in the power of the police, and Mayor Bill de Blasio agreed to cut the Police Department budget.
But for most of the Democratic primary season this spring, nearly every available metric has suggested that the political energy has shifted. The question is, by how much.
The June 22 primary contests for mayor and other city offices are critical, if imperfect, tests of the mood of Democratic voters on the cusp of a summer that many experts believe will be marked by high rates of gun violence in cities across the United States.
The Democratic race for mayor has in some ways reflected national tensions within the party over how far to the left its leaders should tack, after President Biden won the party’s nomination on the strength of moderate Black voters and older Americans, and Republicans secured surprising down-ballot general election victories….
…
Polls have increasingly shown that combating crime is the top priority among New York Democrats, a sentiment that was evident in interviews with voters across the city in recent months, from Harlem to Kew Gardens Hills, Queens. The debate over what role the police should play in maintaining public safety has become the biggest wedge issue in the mayoral campaign.
Eric Adams, the Brooklyn borough president and former police captain who has recently led in the few available public polls, is a relative moderate on questions of policing and charter schools and in his posture toward business and the real estate industry.
In other major contests — most notably, the Manhattan district attorney’s race — there are signs that the contenders who are furthest to the left are struggling to capture the same traction that propelled like-minded candidates in recent years…

It’s a good thing I read the stuff here.
If I hadn’t?
Why I never would have found out that voters are “against crime.”( see headline)
Those not reading this site have no idea what kind of valuable information they are missing out on!

Glad to ‘i form’ ya Jack
A year ago the media WAS screaming about getting rid of cops
It was a stupid lurch to the left that had even Democratic politician’s MOT biting….
The dumb Dem’s running on the defund stuff lost their jobs….
Simple ?
Yea Jack….
And worth mentioning….

The “Defund the police” was a terrible slogan from the start.
With that said, it is foolish to say that the Democrats who promoted it lost their seats. The Democrats who did lose their seats did so for other reasons. Off hand I can’t think of a single Democrat who lost her/his seat because she/he argued to defund the police. The GOP simply took advantage of the slogan and attacked Democrats who didn’t say it.
James, how telling the truth instead of making up shit to promote your hatred? character matters.
jamesb says
The point i was making is what u said….
Democrats got defined with the idea that they where soft on crime….
The old ‘Law and Order’ curse
Jack’s Right
I HAVE pushed back here against Democratic hard Left…..
I have always felt that some of their policy goals are unrealistic and hurtful to parties effort to gain majorities…
I understand the view that Democrat’s should say loud their ‘goals’ and in doing so gets media attention…..
But as i have pointed out….
THAT works some places
Bit on the whole?
My feeling is and has been that America is a center RIGHT place overall….
I ranted here against Bernie Sanders ‘free’ stuff paid for by the middle class and Sanders dream is going nowhere….
Amen…..
Biden is moving slowly….
Democrats likewise….
AOC & Co. Works in select places
Good….
But Z?
The bottom line is the White House and majorities in Legislature’s….
Ya gotta get THOSE FIRST….
And that is never gonna happen with just a Hard Left Democratic agenda….

And how ya doing Z?

I have some very serious problems right now. This is easily the biggest challenge of my life. I am trying to be optimistic, but the word “optimistic” is not really applicable.
I think I can at least think coherently – at least most of the time. That was less certain a week ago.

Everyone here will be rooting for you.
Zreebs says
Thank you. I appreciate it.
CG, I have been impressed with your progression in recent years. While we don’t always agree, I believe your comments often have very valid points, and you provide value to the blog. Thank you.

I certainly join everyone else here in being behind you Zreebs.
And along with a Keith, I’m confident you will,

Rooting for you in any way I can as you face this challenge Zreebs.

Thank you all for your kind support. I feel like you are my friends. In some minor ways, I share my inner thoughts with you that I don’t always share with people who know me better than you.
As I move forward, I must work better at staying positive – which means that the blog might not work for me anymore. I have been accustomed (more than with most other people) to being frank in my interactions with you. Hopefully, you took it as I intended, and in a weird way even respected me for that.
I hope I caused no one unjustified pain over the years for any unfair criticisms or for me just being a jerk, If so, I truly do genuinely apologize. I know I am flawed.
Thank you for being my virtual friends and for the times we shared together. I am glad I was able to meet a couple of you over the years. I enjoyed the time we spent together.
If I have any news on any developments, I will share. If I don’t share, please don’t ask.
Maybe later, but probably not for awhile. Thank you again.

Zreebs is totally correct here, those actually talked about defunding the police got themselves re-elected to Congress. The Republicans smartly (for political purposes) simply said all Democrats want to defund the police (not true) when all they wanted was police reform. Something we should all want after what happens almost every day to folks like George Floyd.
The Republicans tried this lie again in the New Mexico special House election and this time it fell flat since the winning Democratic Candidate successfully made the case that you can support law enforcement and want bad cops removed from the system at the same time.
I love it when James says he’s been “pushing something” he considers good politics. Does that include his desire to move on from January 6th like Mitch McConnell wants?
Everyone here knows that the Republicans will lie and distort to win elections. Everyone knows that the Republicans will push this falsehood that Democrats are against the police. Just like everyone knows that it was Republicans who viciously attacked Capitol Hill Police and that their elected Representatives want to cover up the planning behind that attack.
It isn’t the Democrats who are anti-police but the Republicans sure are anti-democracy. They tried to overturn a legitimate election just as they are determined to fix, in their favor, future elections.
Everyone knows these things whether they admit it or not.
One thing for sure, everyone is rooting for Zreebs to master his challenge and beat back cancer. I, for one, know he will.
jamesb says
And you repeat my view that Democrats git tagged on the wrong side of ‘law and order’ issue Keith…..
It cost them…..
In the end?
The NYC Dem primary is just and example of what happens to someone who gets too far to the left….

Contrary to what CG wishes were true Trump supporters are the most loyal GOP voters–when they show up to the polls.
They believe every conservative media talking points (lies) about all Democrats wanting to abolish police. When Trump is on the ballot they show up and never vote Democrat.
The good news for Democrats is that these voters are generally less educated and less likely to show up in non Presidential elections, or any time their hero isn’t on the ballot
Keith says
Your view!? It is everyone’s view.
I once told you that you make an obvious political statement and then act as if you have discovered some great and formerly unknown political fact.
The Democrats know what happened in marginal districts in 2020 and corrected for it in the New Mexico special election. Next up, Critical Race Theory and how it is un-American.
This constant harangue about so-called progressives got real old years ago. Not sure how the NY Mayoral primary proves anything other than rank choice voting is confusing.

Jack I must say Charleston was quite the charming city I expected it to be. Ate some great meals, saw some beautiful and historic sites. And got a couple good days at the beach before the rains hit. Back in St Louis now where it’s hotter than SC ever was during our time there

Glad you enjoyed it.
Having lived here all my life, one might think that it’s no big deal to me;however, I always find something new to do.Even just walking the streets I often see something I’ve never seen before.
Which beach did you go to?
Scott P says
We went to Folly Beach. As we didn’t have a car it was the easiest one to Uber to. Nice beach. Hit up a great little hippy beach bar there–Chico Feo.
My Name Is Jack says
Yeah Folly is great.
That’s where I spent my teen years in the summer. Its still a pretty eclectic place.Millionires, old hippies, beach bums, young and old.
I used to surf.Well I should say “tried” to surf!Haha!
That whole front beach used to be a huge Amusement Park with a pier that held several hundred and there were dances and parties every night during the summer.
Yeah I have lots of memories left on Folly Beach!
Hope you get back someday!
