Proud Boys, Oath Keepers Face Financial Squeeze
Wall Street Journal: “The far-right group the Oath Keepers is splintering after board members accused the founder of spending its money on hair dye, steaks and guns. The leader of the Proud Boys, choked off from the financial system, is printing ‘Black Lives Matter’ T-shirts to make money.”
“The finances of the two most visible groups with members involved in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol are sputtering. Leaders are low on cash, struggling with defections and arguing with members over the future.”

Lincoln Project Co-Founder Steve Schmidt: Capitol Riot ‘Profoundly More Dangerous’ Than 9/11 Attacks
By BRITTANY BERNSTEIN
National Review
July 8, 2021 10:26 PM
Lincoln Project co-founder Steve Schmidt claimed on Wednesday that the Capitol riot is a more dangerous event for the future of the United States than the September 11 terrorist attacks were and is likely to cause more deaths.
“The 1/6 attack for the future of the country is a profoundly more dangerous event than the 9/11 attacks,” Schmidt said. “And in the end, the 1/6 attacks are likely to kill a lot more Americans than were killed in the 9/11 attacks, which will include the casualties of the wars that lasted 20 years following it.”
Schmidt’s comments came during the Lincoln Project’s virtual town hall to discuss the group’s mission to “defend democracy in 2022.” The Lincoln Project is an anti-Trump group of ex-Republicans founded by Schmidt, George Conway, John Weaver and Rick Wilson.
“We have had periods of political violence in this country, and I believe we’re on the edge of another one, tragically,” Schmidt added. “We have to fight back against it at the ballot box.”…
Schmidt’s comments came after MSNBC political analyst Matthew Dowd made similar remarks on Wednesday, saying that the Capitol riot was “worse than 9/11” because it has divided the country.
“To me, though there was less loss of life on Jan. 6, Jan.6 was worse than 9/11 because it’s continued to rip our country apart and give permission for people to pursue autocratic means,” Dowd said.

I disagree on the comparison
Thousands died…..

Schmidt is off the deep end here.
The point about how we were more united as a country after 9/11 is certainly true but as distressing and despicable as 1/6 was, it was not 9/11 nor Pearl Harbor.
Something political, such as 1/6 of course is not representative of the majority of the country and can be put down politically and through the legal system. Of course, we need to be vigilant about domestic terrorism, whatever the political motivation.
A foreign generated attack, that seeks to kill people regardless of their political beliefs in America is potentially far more dangerous. There is always the chance of another 9/11 or something worse if we miss something just one time.

I was disgusted, saddened and angered on Jan.6. I continue to have those feelings 6 months later because of the reluctance of one party to discount the events of that day.
I don’t care to compare what happened that day to 9-11, the first WTC bombing, Oklahoma City or any other tragedies carried out by terrorists.
Unlike those other attacks that happened 19-28 years ago it is yet to be seen how our reaction to the coup attempt affects future events.
Scott P says
Should say “reluctance of one party to address events of that day”

Scott is right and I see no reason to play comparison what about with the most serious act of domestic terrorism since the start of the Civil War.
This was a Republican inspired insurrection attempt that they now try to dismiss because they don’t want an investigation.
How ironic that in the aftermath of this horrible event Republicans all over the Country are trying to make it more difficult for minority voters to vote.

Totally agree.
Can’t add a thing .
Both of you have summed it up .

Anyone who doesn’t see an ongoing serious threat to our democracy hasn’t been paying attention. As bad as 9-11 was, I never felt that our democracy was in danger. I do now.
We had multiple investigations over Benghazi because our Libyan ambassador voluntarily went to a consulate in an unprotected and dangerous part of a foreign country. But no investigation of 1-6 in which many hundreds, if not thousands, of domestic terrorists attacked the Capitol?
When only one of the major parties wants to protect our democracy, we are in very serious trouble.

The authoritarian impulse is now rampant in the Republican Party.
Formally merely a few wackos on the extreme, it is now permeating the leadership.

In reply to Zreebs:
When asked if 9/11/2001 should cancel or postpone the November elections, Dr Condoleezza Rice dismissed the idea, saying that this country conducted scheduled elections during war … even during civil war.
But if a significant chunk of one major party, its legislative caucuses and its electorate now disown and try to overturn or thwart properly-conducted democratic elections, then American democracy is in far greater danger now than it was after 9/11.
