For those who don’t know or remember?
Back almost 20 years ago the IRS clamped down on some Conservative Non-Profit groups….
Congressional Republicans threw a shit fit and got then President Obama to back away from that and actually apologize for the tax agency doing its job….
Since then?
Republicans lawmakers in Congress have made cuts to the agencies budget anytime they can….
With Trump in the White House ?
They made even more cuts…..
We now have a Democratic President who has progressives all over him to raise taxes on the rich and corporations to ‘Go BIG’ and undo the 2017 Trump/Republican tax reform law which was actually a giveaway to the rich and corporation and a restriction of local/state tax benefits for Blue state middle income tax payers…
Republican outside groups are getting ready to fight against ANY of the extra billions that President Biden wants to pump into the IRS to go after the rich and corporations that pay little in taxes and actually get refunds on their millions and billions of income every year….
Add another obstacle to the growing list President Joe Biden faces in his negotiations over his massive spending plans: mounting opposition to one of the ways to pay for his proposal — growing the IRS.
Conservative groups have launched a campaign of TV ads, social media messages and emails to supporters criticizing the proposal to hire nearly 87,000 new IRS workers over the next decade to collect money from tax cheats.
They accuse the Biden administration of pushing for the IRS expansion as a way to raise taxes, increase dues paid to left-leaning unions, and increase oversight on political organizations, as happened with the rise of Tea Party groups during the Obama presidency.
The campaign further dampens already remote prospects for bipartisan negotiations. Biden and fellow Democrats have held out hope that the $80 billion proposal to crack down on tax evasion by high-earners and large corporations could be an area of agreement between the two parties, even if the GOP is skeptical about the amount it could raise.
Many Republicans have already expressed opposition to the other ways Biden wants to raise money, including taxes on corporate and wealthy Americans, to pay for his roughly $4 trillion worth of plans to repair roads and bridges and offer free community college and paid family leave, among other proposals.
And some Republicans, who have long worked to shrink the IRS, hope opposition to the IRS proposal — which the administration says will raise $700 billion over a decade — could help defeat Biden’s costly spending plans altogether….

James, Obama didn’t take office until 2009., which was nowhere near “almost 20 years ago”. Use your calculator and Wikipedia if you don’t trust me.
But no, Republicans don’t like funding the IRS to go after tax cheats, and they haven’t for many years. There are people who take deductions for things that they shouldn’t and other people who don’t report all of their income. Why shouldn’t the government go after tax cheats?

Two points: Class tells and Return on Investment
Citizens United vs FEC (2010) was decided under Chief Justice Roberts (appointed by Pres. G.W. Bush). Bye-bye campaign finance reform. Those superrich and superwealthy donors want to see some return on their money.
Hard to tell how long the Republican power structure can keep riding that three-leggèd stool (hawks, plutocrats and evangicals).
Trump had hoped to lock in the socially- and culturally-aggrieved working classes with that 2020 post-tax-cut economic boom that never happened. If Biden and the Democratic Congress pass and enact enough stimulus and support to make the post-pandemic economy grow rather than shrink, that hoped-for edge will redound to them rather than to Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell and the House Republican Conference.
This GOP attitude towards taxes (not shared, however, by all of the cleverest of the Forbes 100) puts in prettyharsh light the Clinton/Blair Third Way hope of somehow smothering over class and economic differences with some bright technocratic Silicon Valley/Wall Street future.
