This will be a test on how strong the post -Trump political ‘brand’ will be in the party….
We know that several establishment Republicans are NOT sorry to see Donald Trump gone..
But they faithful will be trying to hold the Trump ‘juice’ together for Trump , but mores for their own …..
The Republican Party political civil war has come back out in the open….
Former President Donald Trump’s supporters are mobilizing to exact revenge on the 10 House Republicans who supported impeachment last week, thrusting the GOP into a civil war just as party leaders are trying to move on from the Trump era.
Pro-Trump Republicans are racing to launch primary challenges. The former president’s donors are cutting off the Republican incumbents. And Trump’s political lieutenants are plotting how to unseat them.
The unrest shows how Trump is all but certain to cast a shadow over the Republican Party long after he’s left the White House. Trump has split the GOP, pitting his loyalists against those who say he incited the Capitol Hill insurrection and want to expunge him from the party.
Whether the Trump-inspired primary challengers succeed is far from clear. Dislodging an incumbent is notoriously difficult, and Republican leaders are expected to move aggressively to protect their members. But the early activity illustrates the degree to which Trump’s staunch allies are determined to make his critics pay a price….

“Republican Civil War?”
I don’t see that yet.
If anything it’s more like a simmering “guerilla war.”
Sure there was a lot of verbosity, particularly on the day of the insurrection ,but when the dust settled ,the action was quite limited.
Ten Republican House members did vote to impeach Trump at great political sacrifice I might add, however it was still only about 5% of the caucus. The RNC still remains solidly Trumpite. On the state level? Most of the action is Trumpers trying to banish anti Trumpers(see Arizona)
In the Senate, there are a few anti Trump Republicans ,but none appear willing to wage real Civil War against theTrump faction.Instead, they content themselves with occasional oratory.Important to some extent ,but as I began ,more in the nature of guerilla warfare.
It will of course take several months to see how it all shakes out.I presume that if Trumps popularlarity among the Republican base starts to fray, them maybe it will rise to the level of a civil war
But right now?I don’t see it .
Also ,remember James believes there is a “civil war” raging in the Democratic Party whose “battles” consist of occasional verbal blasts by Bernie Sanders (whom he doesn’t consider a Democrat) and of course AOC .
Accordingly one can see the low requirements for “civil war” in his mind.
