First….
I have to change my view of the judge….
I did NOT know he had experience in the Justice Department before going on the bench….I only viewed him as a judge…
Now?
That experience is being aired against him in a Washington Post piece….
The piece voices criticism against Garland for siding with law enforcement in doing his job in the past….In picking him also?….Biden would leave a US Appeals Court slot vacant for Trump to fill….Choosing him (some feel he is owed something for the way the GOPer’s refused his Supreme Court conformation) will probably get the judge confirmed easily with the Republicans but could cause Biden a headache within his own political house…
The piece points out that Sally Yates could get confirmed only if both Goregia US Senate candidates win and the Democrats control the Senate….
It also points out that blacks are not happy with Doug Jones as a choice….
Biden IS in a tough spot on this as has been repeated….
The incoming Attorney General would have deal with their bosses son’s legal issues, clean up the Justice Department, and also deal with the remnants of the Trump admin that has a LOT of loose ends and some criminality that will left over….
But as Garland draws increasingly serious consideration, some defense lawyers and criminal justice reform advocates say they worry Garland’s record on the bench shows he is too deferential to the government and law enforcement — and perhaps would not be as aggressive about implementing the kind of dramatic changes they had hoped for….

I don’t subscribe to the WP so I could only read the part of the article you posted.
It contained nothing about “blacks are not happy with Doug Jones as a choice.”
You have echoed that line several times here .
My research reveals that the “unhappiness” with Jones by “Blacks” is mostly with certain Black politicos in Alabama and concerns a dustup over some internal Democratic Party matters not with his ability to serve as AG.
Indeed Jones has been endorsed by Jim Clyburn ,probably one of the most influential Black politicians in the country ,particularly with Biden.
Even Al Sharpton, certainly no shrinking violet when it comes to racial matters ,has essentially said that Jones would be “acceptable.”
For no particular reason that I can discern ,you are opposed to Jones.Thats okay ,but when you start claiming that Blacks in general are opposed to him? That simply isn’t true.
Personally ,any of those prominent mentioned would be fine with me;however, for strategic reasons ,I believe a Garland appointment may create additional problems vis a vis filling his judicial position.
jamesb says
Both Clyburn and Sharpton want a Black AG….
Both of course do not want to dictate Biden’s choice…
Jones IS NOT who they want to see get the spot…
Last time i looked those two guys where blacks in general of statue that Joe Biden knows and speaks to….
My Name Is Jack says
So your statement should have been Blacks are opposed to aWhite AG .
jamesb says
That is YOUR statement counselor….
My Name Is Jack says
No it’s the only logical conclusion as to your statement about Clyburn and Sharpton. You said “they want a Black AG implying I presume that they wouldn’t want Jones because he is White; otherwise ,such a statement is irrelevant to this discussion and your statement that Blacks”are not happy with Jones .”
A perfect example how your lies and obfuscation works.
You don’t like Jones so you attempt to prove various negative things about him like Blacks are opposed to him.Unable to do so, you fall back on the ,well Blacks want a Black AG.Maybe so, but that doesn’t translate into specific opposition to Jones.
As I pointed out, both have said that they weren’t opposed to Jones and Clyburn said he would make a good AG.
jamesb says
I di not KNOW sen Jones Z…..
I might actually like him if i met him….
do NOT think he would be a Good choice…
Obviously right now neither does Boden since he has NOT Picked him….
I HAVE changed my mind about Garland being good for the job… But as Jack points out picking him could cause a loss of a Appellate court seat…
My choice would be Yates who cannot get the job if Republicans are the Senate majority…
It IS complicated and Biden seems in no hurry
Maybe he will wait until Jan 5?
My Name Is Jack says
Will you quit wit that “haven’t met him” jive!
You do that all the time and it’s is dumb and stupid!
We are talking politics here .Rarely do any of us personally “know” the people we are talking about. When I use “don’t like” it is in the political sense not the personal sense.
You well know that ,but think you are being clever ,as if deflecting the remark in some way.
More silly goofiness.
jamesb says
Actually i won’t quit it….
Again?
I don’t actually ‘know’ the guy….
So?
I REALLY don’t know if I’d like or dislike the guy…
Which is what Z is trying to pin on me…
My Name Is Jack says
I would expect nothing less.
When challenged on your silliness you always react this way.
We here are all used to it.Its what we have been talking about this morning.
Carry on…
Zreebs says
The last two Democratic attorneys general were black, and our justice system is sill unfair to black people. We need to stay committed to racial justice as that remains a big problem. But that doesn’t mean the attorney general needs to be black.
jamesb says
I agree with ur last Z….
Biden may also since the short list IS white…
Keith says
I tend to agree with Jack, and this is a case of someone looking for evidence of a crime that hasn’t happened yet.
I thought the favorite candidate was supposed to be Sally Yates, at least that is what I have been told here.
I have a different theory, that could be blown out of the water if Biden makes his pick this coming week, but I think the Biden people are waiting for the results of the Georgia special to determine how to play McConnell if his majority still stands.
I have always thought, while Jones would be a great pick and easier to get past his former colleagues, that Biden, because he is waiting, would like Garland. Biden would rightly be afraid that he couldn’t, even though Garland would be approved for AG, get a replacement for Garland approved for the bench (we all know how Mitch would love to leave that one open).
So, while this may just be silly speculation on my part, a little bird told me that Biden really likes Garland. And, if that is the case, he would logically want to count heads in the Senate. That means he will wait. Let’s see what happens.
jamesb says
I come at the AG pick just about the same way….
Yates the preferred, but conformation issues and Garland actually in second place…
As you point out….
We’ll just have to wait….
Keith says
Yates is preferred by who (or is it whom?). Think about what you just wrote James. How do you know Yates is in first place as you suggest?
jamesb says
Mentioned across the board on the media and what u just said u heard….
She would be good as the best to hit the ground running and fas proved her backbone for doing the right thing…..
Again ?
They ALL have detractions
But separate the confirmation MY feeling IS she would have already been the pick
Zreebs says
And if the Dems win the Senate, then they have enough seats to replace Garland with a younger judge.
jamesb says
Correct Z…..
My Name Is Jack says
That’s a good analysis Keith and I agree with your conclusion.
Scott P says
Keep Garland on the Court and appoint Doug Jones AG.
Nuff said.
jamesb says
Well Scott?
Biden could have made THAT weeks ago …
But?
He hasn’t….
My Name Is Jack says
The idea that Biden hasn’t named anyone yet has no relevance to anything .
He hasn’t appointed a number of positions yet.
So?
jamesb says
CIA and AG are the top two NOT having picks….
Yes there are thousands of jobs for him to fill
bdog says
You are going to need an Attorney General that has such a fine dance to do that it will almost be impossible to do the job…Obviously the Biden’s son matter is dicey to say the least, but also who knows about what the next AG has to do with all the Trump droppings including the miss use of the PPP…That is the big political drama, now onto the dance of race, policing, violence and having to manage all those interacting forces…whether the next AG is white/black, male/female, they aren’t going to please everyone, which in the state of politics we are in today they truthfully won’t please anyone…
Criminal Justice Reform: in the State of New York there have been significant criminal justice reforms that occurred in the last four years…in the best of times reforms are hard to get use to and even harder to implement..add a pandemic, a crumbling economy and continuing reform and you have an utter disaster…You speak to almost any law enforcement officer and they blame the Democrats for rising gun violence and blame the communities they police…you speak to almost any community member they blame the police, racism, the politicians and the economy…It is difficult to think that any AG can deal with this situation when both sides are right, but also ignore their own role in the matter. All those reasons are partially to blame for the criminal justice disaster going on in the state of NY (and by extension the rest of the country) and to see any AG being able to tackle that is incomprehensible to me…Good Luck to whoever gets the gig…
jamesb says
Thanks bdog….
Yes….
The person getting that job shoukd be up to the task….
It appears that Biden & Co. Still are mulling who to pick….
We could in fact see someone other then the 3 listed in the media…
