Longtime GOP strategist Steve Schmidt announced that he is registering as a Democrat after nearly 30 years with the Republican Party.
Schmidt made the announcement during an episode of the “Battleground” podcast published Monday, as he and co-host David Plouffe were discussing the Republican House members and state attorneys general that backed Texas’s ill-fated election lawsuit before the Supreme Court.
“I spent 29 years as a Republican, I’ve spent two and a half as an independent, and later this afternoon I will register as a member of the Democratic Party,” Schmidt told Plouffe. “Because in America today, it’s only the Democratic Party—which is the oldest political party in the world—that stands for the ideas and ideals of American liberty.”….
Steve Schmidt was a long-time collaborator with John McCain, and David Plouffe was one of Barack Obama’s principal campaign managers in 2008. They were both poli sci majors at the University of Delaware (Joe Biden’s alma mater).

Maybe Schmidt who says his principles haven’t changed could resurrect the Democratic Leadership Council or the Coalition For a Democratic Majority ,two groups that while not explicitly “conservative “ advocated policies that today would certainly be viewed that way.
There is room in the party for a Right of Center branch.Indeed, it was from that branch that I first became politically active in my younger days.While my views changed over the years ,a lot of those people now viewed as “conservative Democrats”(see David Boren, Sam Nunn Reuben Askew etc.) added a lot to the party’s success in the past.

I was not the biggest fan of either Nunn or Borden, but I also recognize that a Democrat that i would have preferred would not have been electable in the 80s in either GA or OK. So I agree with your comment that both contributed to the success of the Democratic Party.

I’m all for Democratic candidates who can win. If Jay Nixon–who won two landslide victories for Missouri governor as a moderate to conservative Democrat –challenges Trump puppet Roy Blunt in 2022 I will be all about it.
