Just one of the more than 1,700 students and staff tested for coronavirus last week at city schools as part of the first round of a monthly testing program showed a positive result, Mayor de Blasio announced Tuesday morning.
City officials pledged to test a random sample of between 10 and 20% of the students and staff participating in in-person classes at each school to monitor for any outbreaks. Parents are required to provide their consent in order for doctors to administer the swab test to their kids in school buildings.
The testing began last Friday at 56 city schools. City health officials performed 1,751 tests that day and found one positive case.
“That’s really, really encouraging and says how important it is to constantly keep a lookout, and constantly focus on testing,” de Blasio said at a Tuesday press conference….
