“Shit Show’*
Donald Trump doing his typical lying, bullying myopic self…..
NY Times…
On Tuesday, Mr. Wallace faced harsh reviews as viewers assessed his performance on social media. “Moderate this debate — now,” Michael Beschloss, the presidential historian, demanded on Twitter 15 minutes in, speaking for a large swath of the political class.
In a brute-force style, Mr. Trump flouted the agreed-upon ground rules and refused to allow Mr. Biden his two minutes to respond to questions, leaving Mr. Wallace yelping at one point, “Let him answer!”
Not satisfied with merely speaking over his Democratic opponent, Mr. Trump took aim at the moderator, too, repeatedly scolding Mr. Wallace. “I guess I’m debating you, not him, but that’s OK, I’m not surprised,” Mr. Trump said after one Wallace query he disliked.
The debate had no breaks. But at the midway point, perhaps sensing that Mr. Trump was threatening to steamroll the event, Mr. Wallace did something unusual for a presidential moderator: He effectively called the debate to a temporary halt.
“The country would be better served if we allowed both people to speak with fewer interruptions,” Mr. Wallace said, directly asking Mr. Trump to yield a higher civic ideal. “I’m appealing to you, sir, to do it.”…..
Washington Post…
Biden’s strategy was also clear: To stick to his talking points, try not to engage much, and not give Trump what he wanted.
Biden lost his cool at a few points, including asking, “Will you shut up?” At another point: “It’s hard to get anywhere with this clown — excuse me, this person.” At another: “Keep yapping, man.”
Biden was clearly exasperated at times, and at other times he dealt with it effectively. At one point Trump tried to cut in by saying, “Can I be honest?” Biden shot back: “Try and be honest.”
Biden didn’t allow him to be pulled off his game. And he notably avoided some of the senior and uneasy moments which
It wasn’t an enlightening debate from a policy standpoint, but that was in large part because Trump wanted a foodfight. Biden mostly didn’t give it to him, which much like Trump’s approach reinforced the reality of who’s winning and who’s not….
Fox News…
President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden kicked off their first fiery presidential debate sparring over everything from the Supreme Court nomination, coronavirus and Biden’s sons, with Fox News moderator Chris Wallace admonishing Trump several times for interrupting.
Wallace scolded Trump repeatedly for not following the debate rules by interrupting and the veteran newsman often played the role of a wrestling referee rather than a moderator.
“I hate to raise my voice, but why should I be different than the two of you,” Wallace said.
Trump came out swinging, but Biden held his own and didn’t fall into previous debate pitfalls where he cut his time short or stumbled to get out responses. The two men often talked over each other in a brawl that got unwieldy at times.
Trump touted his record in the White House on boosting the economy and how he handled the pandemic, proclaiming: “There has never been an administration or president who has done more than I’ve done in a period of three and a half years, and that’s despite the impeachment hoax.”
But Biden said under Trump the country has become weaker, sicker, poor, and more violent.
“You’re the worst president America has ever had,” Biden declared at one point….

*Both* of them would have done better by talking 50 percent less. I don’t care if they endorse Biden or not, but they need to speak publicly about why they thought the 25th Amendment might be needed one day. Clearly, it would be needed after tonight more than ever.
They need to stop caring about whatever nasty messages they may get from Trump fans.

More debates?
CNN host Wolf Blitzer said he “wouldn’t be surprised if this is the last presidential debate” after President Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden clashed in a vicious first debate.
“This was the most chaotic presidential debate I’ve ever seen and I suspect most of you, if not all of you, have ever seen,” Blitzer said. “It will certainly raise a lot of questions about the future of a presidential debate between these two candidates.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised, by the way, if this is the last presidential debate between” the two candidates, Blitzer added….

Huffington Post…
President Donald Trump refused to condemn white supremacist violence on Tuesday night, insisting without evidence that violence is a left-wing problem.
During the first presidential debate, moderator Chris Wallace of Fox News asked Trump if he was willing to condemn “white supremacists and militia groups” and tell them to “stand down” in places like Kenosha, Wisconsin, and Portland, Oregon — cities where heavily armed far-right extremists have shown up to anti-racism demonstrations as counterprotesters.
“Sure, I’m willing to do that,” Trump said, “but I would say almost everything I see is from the left wing, not from the right wing.”
“What are you saying?” Wallace asked.
“I’m willing to do anything. I want to see peace,” Trump said.
“Well, then do it, sir,” Wallace pressed.
“Say it. Do it,” Democratic nominee Joe Biden added.
“What do you want to call them?” Trump asked. “Give me a name, go ahead, who would you like me to condemn?
Wallace again asked Trump to condemn white supremacists and right-wing militias. Biden told Trump to condemn the Proud Boys, a violent neo-fascist street gang. At this point, Trump demurred.
“Proud Boys? Stand back and stand by,” Trump said before changing the subject.

This is a hard one, folks. Time and again, this debate proved to me that this is a terrifying time to be alive. Two old men shouting at each other while a third old man tries to get them to stop shouting at each other? Watching this debate was a type of self-destructive behavior that I’ll be recovering from for a while, I think.
However, let’s briefly review who came out on top tonight.
Winner: Trump (but Barely)

They need to go back to the debate rules I remember from 1996.
Ninety second answers, sixty second responses, thirty second rebuttals. The other person is not to say one word when it is not there time.
There were also opening and closing statements. It gives the candidate a chance to say something from memory and hopefully be eloquent.
Why the hell did the Biden campaign agree to “open discussion?”

Since Biden, unlike Trump, actually has a conscience, I imagine he is taking a very long Silkwood shower right now. Trump set the tone, but he played a part in the overall debacle too.

People are saying Biden should refuse to debate Trump after Trump’s wild behavior. No.
1. Ducking a debate looks cowardly.
2. The town hall format with citizens asking questions plays to Biden’s greater knowledge & empathy. Trump cannot use the same filibuster/interrupt tactic.

Yeah, the toplines on this poll weren’t great for Trump to begin with, but if the debate further entrenched negatives about Trump, there’s probably no longer an opportunity for him to turn them around. Then again, those negatives were pretty darned entrenched to begin with.

don’t give him the platform.
Take the hits for being “chicken”. Biden is already ahead. The only people who would complain about Biden ducking a debate are already not voting for him.
I usually hate the “but the children” thing, but if this is what I would have seen in a Presidential debate as a child, I never would have wound up a Poli Sci major, etc, and maybe that would have been a good thing.

The three debates that were agreed to, Biden will be at…this is not a story…now if the campaigns agree to not have three debates because they feel it is not in their candidates best interest I can see that happening, but trump won’t agree to that…all media is good media in his mind and that can’t be changed…So there will be two more of these shit shows…I do think the viewership will be down from this one…people won’t be able to take Trump’s behaviors for too long.

Media callout on the debate….
Perhaps the most chaotic presidential debate in modern American history inspired unprecedented reactions on cable and broadcast news by pundits who, in other circumstances, would have been combing over minor moments to gauge who won and lost.
The consensus among many commentators: The losers of the night were the American public.
“That was a hot mess, inside a dumpster fire, inside a train wreck,” said CNN host Jake Tapper.
“That was the worst debate I have ever seen. It wasn’t even a debate. It was a disgrace.”
His CNN colleague Dana Bash had even sharper words: “I’m just going to say it like it is. That was a s— show.”
“As someone who has watched for 40 years,” said ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, a previous primary debate moderator, “that was the worst presidential debate I have ever seen.”….

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany says Trump believes he won the debate
Scott P says
The next Presidential debate is a town hall format.
This definitely needs to go ahead so we can see Trump demean regular citizen’s concerns and probably once again give marching orders to white supremacist groups–only this time in response to an African-American woman.
Biden does well in these formats where he directly addresses voter’s concerns, especially those who are grieving, with his own personal story.
Scott P says
Sort of related–Former RNC Chairman and Republican Governor of Montana Marc Racicot is the latest high profile former GOP official to endorse Biden.
As I’ve said before these Republican former office holders don’t have much of an effect on current Republican rank and file, as those who are still in the party are fine with it being Trump’s party.
But it moves the needle on independent voters–who have soured incredibly on Trump.
And other than John Bolton they are pretty much all voting for Biden instead of the futility of writing in some vague “anti-Trump principled conservative”.
Hell even the stand in for the “anti-Trump principled conservative” in 2016 himself, Evan McMullen, is voting Joe Biden this year.
Jo Jorgensen is getting just the usual Libertarian vote before Gary Johnson jazzed up that party a bit in 2012 and 2016–in other words less than 1%
