Minorities between the ages of 18 and 34 are showing overwhelming support for former Vice PresidentJoe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, in a national poll released this week by Buzzfeed Newsand Telemundo.
The poll found 60 percent of young Latino voters, 75 percent of young non-Hispanic Black voters, and 72 percent of young non-Hispanic Asian voters said that they would vote for Biden.
Respectively, 19 percent, 12 percent, and 16 percent of respondents in those groups said they would vote to reelect President Trump. Among young non-Hispanic white voters, 40 percent said they’d vote for Trump and 48 percent said they would vote for Biden.

Washington (CNN) President Donald Trump abruptly ended a Saturday news conference after a reporter challenged him on a lie about veterans health care he has told more than 150 times.
Trump, speaking at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club, had claimed again that he is the one who got the Veterans Choice program passed — adding, “They’ve been trying to get that passed for decades and decades and decades and no president’s ever been able to do it, and we got it done.”
In fact, former President Barack Obama signed the Choice program into law in 2014. The law, which allowed eligible veterans to be covered by the government for care provided by doctors outside the VA system, was a bipartisan initiative spearheaded by two senators Trump has repeatedly criticized, Bernie Sanders of Vermont and the late John McCain of Arizona.
What Trump signed was a 2018 law, the VA MISSION Act, that modified and expanded the eligibility criteria from the Choice program. Rather than tout that bill, Trump has claimed over and over that he created Veterans Choice itself — after others had failed for “50 years.”
“Why do you keep saying that you passed Veterans Choice?” CBS News White House correspondent Paula Reid asked Trump at the Saturday news conference, during which Trump announced executive actions on coronavirus relief.
As Trump tried to call on another reporter instead, Reid continued, “You said that you passed Veterans Choice. It was passed in 2014…it was a false statement, sir.”
Trump paused, then responded: “OK. Thank you very much, everybody.” He then walked away as the song “YMCA” played.
Trump had either never or almost never been challenged on the Veterans Choice claim before Reid did so.

Democrats Decry “Sabotage” After “Friday Night Massacre” at Postal Service
Daniel Politi 1 day ago
Several Democrats accused the Trump administration of trying to sabotage the country’s mail system after a broad restructuring of the United States Postal Service that some have characterized as a “Friday Night Massacre.” Postmaster General Louis DeJoy moved forward with a significant reorganization of the Postal Service leadership along with a hiring freeze for leadership positions. The reorganization involves the reassignment or displacement of 23 USPS executives, including some who had been at the Postal Service for decades. Among the targets of the reorganization were the two top executives who oversee daily operations at the Postal Service.
The Postal Service said that “the new organization will align functions based on core business operations and will provide more clarity and focus on what the Postal Service does best; collect, process, move and deliver mail and packages.” But analysts say the new structure gives more power to DeJoy, a big Trump ally who has been under scrutiny lately amid delivery delays and the way that could impact the election at a time when voting by mail is expected to soar because of the pandemic.
Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia, a Democrat who leads the committee that oversees the postal service characterized the USPS overhaul as “sabotage.” Connolly wrote on Twitter that the overhaul is “really a Trojan Horse” and amounts to “deliberate sabotage to disrupt mail service on the eve of the election — an election that hinges on mail-in ballots.” He wasn’t alone. Sen. Elizabeth Warren linked to a story of the shakeup and wondered: “How many ways can the new Postmaster General sabotage the @USPS?” Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon also used the word “sabotage” to characterize the administration’s actions regarding the Postal Service. Sen. Kamala Harris also joined in on the criticism, saying that the shakeup in the Postal Service’s leadership shows how “they are trying to take down the United States Postal Service from the inside—at a time when we need it the most.”
The shakeup in the USPS leadership came mere days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer had a closed-door meeting with DeJoy that Schumer described as “heated.” Democrats have been critical of recent cost-cutting initiatives imposed by DeJoy, a big Trump donor, at the Postal Service that they say are impacting the service and could hinder the ability of Americans to vote by mail. Several key Democrats have called on the inspector general for the Postal Service to investigate the new policies imposed by DeJoy, who is the first postmaster general in nearly two decades who was not promoted from within the Postal Service.

What a dumb article by Brown. The Vice Presidency is what each President makes it. Trump’s fragile ego means that Mother Pence can only smile and eat shit. The previous three two term Presidents all relied on their Vice Presidents for guidance and were given important roles in the administration.
CG says
Sounds to me like Brown might not like the idea of reading stories about himself.

Here’s the relevant part of the multi-topic SF Chron column by Willie Brown (D, former Speaker of the California Assembly, former Mayor of San Francisco). Brown wants Kamala Harris to shoot for William Barr’s (formerly Eric Holder’s and RFK’s) job instead of VP. [via MSN]
Willie Brown: Kamala Harris should say no to vice presidency
“If Joe Biden offers the vice presidential slot to Sen. Kamala Harris, my advice to her would be to politely decline.
Harris is a tested and proven campaigner who will work her backside off to get Biden elected. That said, the vice presidency is not the job she should go for — asking to be considered as attorney general in a Biden administration would be more like it.
Being picked for the vice presidency is obviously a huge honor, and if Biden wins, Harris would make history by being the first woman to hold the job.
But the glory would be short-lived, and historically, the vice presidency has often ended up being a dead end. For every George H.W. Bush, who ascended from the job to the presidency, there’s an Al Gore, who never got there.
True, the vice president does have an advantage the next time the party needs a new nominee, which in Biden’s case could be four years from now. But in the meantime, the vice president has no real power and little chance to accomplish anything independent of the president.
Basically, no one takes the vice president seriously after election day. Just ask Mike Pence.
Plus, if Biden wins, the Democrats will be moving into the White House in the middle of a pandemic and economic recession. The next few years promise to be a very bumpy ride. Barack Obama and the Democrats saved the nation from economic collapse when he took office, and their reward was a blowout loss in the 2010 midterm elections.
On the other hand, the attorney general has legitimate power. From atop the Justice Department, the boss can make a real mark on everything from police reform to racial justice to prosecuting corporate misdeeds.
And the attorney general gets to name every U.S. attorney in the country. That’s power.
Plus, given the department’s current disarray under William Barr, just showing up and being halfway sane will make the new AG a hero.
Best of all, being attorney general would give Harris enough distance from the White House to still be a viable candidate for the top slot in 2024 or 2028, no matter what the state of the nation.”
Keith says

No, Brown is saying she should turn it down if offered. That’s very different.
It is widely understood that Veepstake losers often get Cabinet posts. It’s a consolation prize. I think she might prefer being a Senator from California though.
CG says
I remember there being talk (when I still very young) in 1992 of George H.W. Bush picking a new running mate and making Dan Quayle Attorney General instead in order to let him gain some gravitas.
Something like this happened on “Veep” where the sitting Veep made a deal to support another candidate for a Cabinet slot, etc ,but it has never really happened.
It reminds me though that Ronald Reagan put his 1976 running-mate, Richard Schweiker in his Cabinet after 1980.
jamesb says

His point is well taken? Really James?
Jack is right. No one would chose to wait to be picked as Attorney General if they had the Vice Presidency handed to them. Why would they?
The Vice Presidency stopped being a “bucket of warm spit” when Clinton picked Al Gore, and if anyone knows what a Vice President can do it is certainly Joe Biden.
jamesb says
I agree with the importance of the office and so Biden should pick Rice as Eugene Robertson said in his piece….
Harris can of course handle the position
Scott P says
No one in this day and age turns down the Vice Presidency.
As Keith noted it hasn’t been a ticket to nowhere for ages now.
The last time I recall a VP choice turning down a spot on the ticket was in 1996 when (supposedly) Bill Bennett declined Bob Dole’s offer.
Before that you probably have to go back to 1972 when McGovern had to go with the 7th or so name on his list for replacing Tom Eagleton on the Democratic ticket.
CG says
In her divorce filing, Joni Ernst said she turned down an offer for Trump to be his running-mate. Perhaps she turned down consideration though. I think it is unlikely she was ever actually offered the gig.
CG says
McCain turned down John Kerry in 2004.
Scott P says
I don’t think an offer was ever on the table between Trump and Ernst or Kerry and McCain.
In both cases they removed themselves from consideration. I think Colin Powell did that too in 2000.
I’m talking about someone actually being offered the position and turning it down. I think that’s pretty rare. Taking yourself out of consideration because of personal issues or because it could hurt your political future (as I imagine the Ernst and McCain situations were respectively) is a different matter.
CG says
I believe Bob Woodward recounted that Kerry actually asked McCain, somewhat informally.
Scott P says
OK I’ll take Woodward’s word for it.
And while it could have been a ticket to make history it would have killed McCain’s chances to run for President again either way.
If he won he’d have been stuck as VP–if he lost the GOP would never have nominated him in 2008.
CG says
Well, John McCain never had any intention of voting for John Kerry, despite a friendly relationship. He knew better and campaigned very hard for GWB’s reelection.
Of course in 2008, McCain wanted to offer it to Lieberman but was talked out of out by his advisors, perhaps including Lieberman himself.
CG says
A bunch of Democrats did turn down Selina Meyer in Veep.
She was prepared to offer it to Democrat Jonah Ryan as a last option.
You would think these pretend politicians could have envisioned she would be driven from office in disgrace or something and they would have become President.
CG says
Marcy Kaptur turned down Ross Perot. She wasn’t the only one though.
CG says
Last cycle, there was a story that Kasich said he was offered the VP slot in a conversation between his camp and Trump Jr.
Apparently, Kasich was told he could basically run policy wise while DJT would simply be in charge of “making America great.”
Scott P says
Yeah third parties are a whole other ball of wax.
In Perot’s case Stockdale never wanted the VP spot to be permanent, he only let himself be named to get on the ticket the ballot. But after Perot dropped out then dropped back in again only a month before the election he was stuck with the job.

Harris has been ,in effect ,running for VP for awhile now .
To suggest that after all this she would tell Biden “No thank you sir but how about appointing me AG if you win.”
Is beyond stupid.
CG says
We will never heard the conversation, but I think we just know that Biden is going to formally ask this of whomever he decides to swipe left on in a very awkward sort of way.
CG says
“Look, here’s the deal. I am literally serious. I want you to be my partner, I mean by number two, I mean my partner in government. Jill is my partner of course. I am totally serious. I want to win with you and run with you. My word as a Biden. I am literally not making this up. What do you say?”
My Name Is Jack says
McCain still wanted to run for President himself.
I don’t think Kerry thought he would accept.

Of course most people believe that JFKs offer to LBJ was perfunctory too.
LBJ though said yes.

Story has been that Obama offered his rivals Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden State and the VP, with Biden picking VP (after being assured that he would be the last person to leave the room) and Clinton getting State.
Gov. Earl Warren (Gov. Dewey’s running mate in 1948) was, it has been said or written, was nominated Chief Justice in 1953 in exchange for staying out of Ike’s way to the GOP nomination in 1952.

It is time for some state Attorney General to file a lawsuit to disband the St. Louis Cardinals. They are going to ruin this MLB season for all kinds of people.
By the way, the *one* MLB team to not have a positive Covid-19 test yet are the Ricketts Family owned Chicago Cubs.
Scott P says
The MLB season will be canceled in the next couple of weeks.
CG says
I hope not. There’s not really a reason to. It’s a Cardinals problem, not an MLB problem.
Just have them forfeit their season.

I’m not sure that Susan Rice would be scheduled as a speaker even if she weren’t in consideration for VP. She’s not known as a great orator or campaigner. And if she is picked it will not be due to those skills.

I’ve seen nothing in the news about that Commission Trump created after his election chaired by Kobach and Pence to “investigate” voting fraud.
With Trump lying daily (as well as other Republicans) about all the voting fraud that is supposedly rampant in the country ,it’s useful to remember this boondoggle from 2017-18.
The so called “investigation” revealed nothing except idiotic talk from Trump and wild unsubstantiated claims from Kobach.
Nothing.Zero,Zilch.
Even Kobach made claims that there were like 5000 “fraudulent “ votes cast in the US .He couldn’t even prove that and, even assuming that’s true.
Big damn deal.
The Republicans have been in this kick for years and generally are reduced to babble about events of sixty years ago for their “proof.”
More Lies ,emblematic of this Republican Administration.
Oh the “commission?
It was quietly disbanded.

Keller @ Large: What To Watch For In Markey-Kennedy Debate
By Jon Keller
WBZ-TV – CBS Boston
BOSTON (CBS) – Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey and Rep. Joe Kennedy will debate Tuesday at 7 p.m. on WBZ-TV. Political analyst Jon Keller will moderate.
Here’s what Jon says you should watch for:
Popcorn? Check.
Cold beverages? Check.
Twitter handle set? #wbzdebate, check.
You’re ready for Tuesday night’s climactic Massachusetts Senate Democratic primary showdown between incumbent Sen. Ed Markey and challenger Rep. Joe Kennedy. But what are you likely to see?
For starters, look for both candidates to be on offense.
Recent polling pegs the race as a tossup, as both men have done a good job of consolidating their core support. But with all the unexpected complications of the pandemic – no large rallies, no flesh-pressing (beyond some awkward elbow-bumping), and little opportunity to go door-to-door without scaring the daylights out of people – it seems likely there is a decisive pool of voters who haven’t been reached and may just now be starting to focus on the race.
At this moment of high anxiety and despair with the status quo, neither candidate can afford to be on the defensive tonight as their opponent shreds their record.
Kennedy has upped the ante in the past week with a web ad mocking Markey’s regular-guy-from-Malden TV spots and accusing him of supporting telecommunications deregulation policies that cost local blue-collar jobs. And Markey had to awkwardly apologize for his handling of a long-ago meeting with the family of slain Easton resident DJ Henry, a black man killed by police under very questionable circumstances.
Kennedy will surely press those lines of attack. And I fully expect Markey, who has only sporadically counterattacked in previous debates after coming on strong in the first one back in February, to bark back hard.
A recent Markey web ad mocking Kennedy for downplaying the political prospects of Medicare for All is an example of how the incumbent wants to portray his much-younger rival – as a callow kid who lacks the political chops to get anything done. Markey has spent more time than he wanted to fending off Kennedy’s argument that it’s time for a change, and his symbolic efforts to deflect the charge of being out of touch – shooting hoops in his Nikes, and boasting of his large Twitter following – have seemed anemic. Tonight, look for him to tout his backing by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and his support from remnants of the Bernie Sanders base as more tangible signs of hipness, while citing Kennedy’s support from trade unions as a sign that his opponent is the one beholden to old ways of doing business.
You never know what candidates will do in a live TV debate until they do it, although with just one last debate remaining after tonight, the time to step up is now. But I can promise you one thing – tonight’s format won’t get in their way.
There will be no formal opening or closing statements. Each candidate will be given one minute to respond to the same question, drawn from a list that includes submissions from voters. After they’ve each had their turn, it’s showtime, open periods of debate in which they can question one another, refer back to previous remarks, move into other topics, pretty much anything they want as long as it’s coherent, relevant and orderly.
These will continue until the exchange is played out; then we move on to another question. There are just three inviolable rules: no filibustering, no talking over one another, and total obedience to the moderator’s directions.
Otherwise, they might enter my cocoon of horror. Wisely, no one has ever risked it.

It is always good when milestones happen and Americans can look and see what is possible in this country, Congratulations to Senator Harris.
Obviously, I do not at all support much of what she and Joe Biden would bring to America policy-wise, but I will be rooting for them to win this one election, because Donald Trump is so unworthy and his continuance in office, one day more than necessary, will continue to harm our culture and the lives of Americans.
The people will speak, and yes I will speak by voting, but for neither major option, and then the burden of governance will be on those who win.
CG says
The particular milestones because people tend to like to note things-
First woman of color on a ticket
First Asian-American on a ticket
First Caribbean-American on a ticket
First person on a ticket in an interracial marriage
I suppose it is worth nothing that in the early 1800s, Martin Van Buren’s Vice President openly lived with and had children with a black woman, but they were not legally married.
Also, this is not a criticism, and I doubt it will even be mentioned in the campaign, but I cannot remember the last person who was on a ticket who did not have at least one child.
