More people are going to lose their jobs as some states reclose and local and state governments deal with holes in their 2021 budgets…

On Thursday, the Labor Department reported that the total number of people claiming unemployment insurance for the week ending July 4 — without any seasonal adjustments — equaled 31.8 million.
Ernie Tedeschi, a policy economist at Evercore ISI, estimates that the actual figure is closer to 30 million, roughly one out of every five workers — a staggering number by any count.
The Labor Department categorizes the claims in separate batches. In one are those filed through states’ regular unemployment insurance systems, a number that rose last week for the first time in months. A second includes people who filed through the federal government’s temporary Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, for workers not ordinarily eligible for state benefits. A third and growing group includes recipients who exhausted their regular benefits but are eligible for an additional 13 weeks of emergency assistance that Congress passed after the coronavirus outbreak.
Over the past couple of months, the labor market showed surprising gains as businesses reopened and rehired workers. The overall jobless rate dipped in June to 11.1 percent from a peak of 14.7 percent in April. But troubling weaknesses may be reflected in the weekly tallies of laid-off workers filing new applications, Mr. Tedeschi said….
…
The stubbornly high rate of new weekly claims more than four months into the coronavirus pandemic “suggests that the nature of the downturn has changed from early on,” said Ernie Tedeschi, a policy economist at Evercore ISI. It may mean that businesses are shutting down again as cases surge in some places, or that funds from emergency federal loans through the Paycheck Protection Program are running out, he said — or worse, something more fundamental….
…
States have been whittling away at the backlog of unemployment claims, but persistent delays in some places have continued….
…
The four-month pause that has protected millions of Americans from eviction cases is set to expire at the end of this week. But that hasn’t stopped landlords across the country from trying to get a head start forcing renters out, reports Matthew Goldstein….
Note…
The Trump Labor Dept. has been a mess with reporting the numbers leaving some to wonder if Trump has interfered with the process….

Judge Orders Michael Cohen Released from Prison
A federal judge on Thursday ordered the release from prison of President Donald Trump’s former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen by Friday afternoon, CNBC reports.
Judge Alvin Hellerstein found that Cohen was sent back to prison on July 10 in retaliation for failing to agree to not to publish a book about Trump as one of multiple conditions for serving the remainder of his three-year prison term on home confinement.
Said Hellerstein: “I’ve never seen such a clause, in 21 years in being a judge.”

Gohmert Required Full Staff In Office Without Masks
July 29, 2020 at 1:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment
Just after reports that Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) had tested positive for coronavirus, Politico got an email from one of his aides:
“Thank you for letting our office know Louie tested positive for the Coronavirus. When you write your story, can you include the fact that Louie requires full staff to be in the office, including three interns, so that ‘we could be an example to America on how to open up safely.’ When probing the office, you might want to ask how often were people berated for wearing masks.”
My Name Is Jack says
One of the great stories of this era will be the mindless politicizing of a public health measure by the Kooky Republicans.
Yesterday Mississippi Gov Reeves said that the reason he wasn’t mandating masks was because that would cause people not to wear them!
Obviously he was referring to the Republican nutjobs.
In other news of Republican kooks,SC Congressman Ralph Norman introduced those doctors that Trump was boosting .Did you know they have a surefire “cure” for Covid ?This was the film that featured that idiotic doctor who teaches about demons.
As I continue to illustrate,Republicans are increasingly irrational.
Keith says
But Jack, I thought the Governor of Mississippi was getting high marks for his handling of the virus.
The video that Trump retweeted is getting millions of views. Folks all over Facebook are saying the virus can be cured easily. This is like an out-of-body experience, like we are watching a bad science fiction movie.
The response yesterday from some of the House Republicans yesterday in their refusal to wear a mask was amazing. And today, one of the main douche Republicans has tested positive.
We may be witnessing the end of the Republican Party, they are all killing themselves.
CG says
Reeves was far more resistant on openings than other southern Governors and that was noted many times in the media.
My Name Is Jack says
Reeves must have been giving himself “high marks.”
He joins DeSantis, Kemp,Abbott ,McMaster and now Tenn. Gov. Bill Lee in his ineptitude in handling the virus.
Just yesterday Lee denied Trump Advisor Deborah Birx plea to close all bars in an effort to bring down infections.
I never knew Republicans were so fond of bars?Must be those “evangelicals.”Theyre pretty hypocritical about everything else ,why not their opposition to “demon rum?”
CG says
We have been through this before, but the people gathering at bars and other parties and causing an increased spread of the virus are unlikely to be Republican.
Not everyone is as political as we are.
My Name Is Jack says
Then close the bars down.
That’s easy.
CG says
Who closes down the house parties?
My Name Is Jack says
Anything to take the heat of the Republicans.
CG says
My goodness the answer has been clear all along and we didn’t even realize it…
The time has come for the Prohibition Party! Led by none other than their Presidential nominee, our old friend from P1 Phil Collins!
My Name Is Jack says
Lee in Tennessee specifically refused to do so even though Birx , a Trump science advisor, asked him to.
Why?
It’s like Republicans simply refuse to do anything constructive about trying to lessen the impact of this catastrophe.
Inexplicably.
Keith says
I think you might need to get out more Corey, being safe and socially distant of course. You can still tell a person’s political affiliation simply by the fact that they will wear a mask. Our President even told you that.
So, by extension, and given the fact that Republicans, like Louie Gohmert and Gym Jordan are against mask wearing (down to the fact that Louie thinks he got the virus from his mask) I find it the height of denial to think that the people who are stupid enough to go into an enclosed bar space without a mask are not also Republicans.
CG says
The young people going to bars (not that I do not know of people in their 70s and 80s are back to going to bars now….no not my parents, just their friends) and those having large House parties that are being livestreamed on Facebook, etc. are demographically the least likely to be Republican.
Scott P says
Just say they aren’t white. We know where you are going here with “demographic s”
CG says
Young people of all races. None of them are likely to be Trump supporters. The people at the bars and beaches (and beach bars) and pools tend to be white. The specific activity of having large house parties that are shown live on Facebook seem to be more related to African-Americans.
jamesb says
Less prone to Trump brain washing?
jamesb says
Red state governors seem to be especially gullible …
CG says
Age is a demographic
Scott P says
And we’ve also been through how you got that “finding” out of your ass.
CG says
Me?
We all have seen polls and past voter studies that show the younger a person is, the less likely they are to be a Republican, especially these days. I imagine there might be a Trump voter or two among the crowds, but most likely, the people going to bars and partying are not doing so i support of DJT. They aren’t thinking of him at all.
The same can be said for the large house parties thrown by young African-Americans (not that white kids do not do the same thing), but that are specifically livestreamed on Facebook. There are probably not a lot of MAGA backers there.
I hope Scott is doing his part and staying away from the bars until this is over.
Scott P says
Iv3 only been going to outdoor patios where it is possible to social distance. And I always wear a mask. The people I know who complain about the mask requirements or bars that are closing indoor service are all either Republican or libertarian types.
Keith says
Over 50 percent of all Republicans believe that the virus is not a serious health threat. They believe the President and his new voodoo doctor lecturing us all about demon sperm.
Do the math. The vast majority of all virus deniers are Republicans. If they don’t feel threatened by the virus then they will be less likely to wear a mask. (Remember, Louie thinks he got the virus from wearing one.)
So it only follows that mask skeptics skew Republican.
They tend to be anti-science and anti-education — and they resent the rules that keep them from their “freedom.”
jamesb says
Yes Keith and u might wanna add that they are as dumb as rooks
My Name Is Jack says
The old legal adage that no one has the right to yell fire in a crowded theater rested on the proposition that such would cause panic likely resulting in physical harm and possibly death to another .
Tell me the difference in that and refusing to wear a mask whereby one could transmit a potentially fatal disease to another person.
“Freedom “ is not absolute.Never has been.It is limited in many instances by legislative enactments. One mans “freedom” can be another mans straight jacket.
In this national health emergency ,which will likely be the defining moment of our times, to use the word “freedom” as some kind of defense against mask wearing or even as an argument against mandating it is absurd.
Scott P says
In my travels to rural counties that voted 75-80% Republican in 2016 I’ve been the only person with a mask inside any of the businesses.
CG says
Lots of people are saying very positive things about demon semen. It could be a great cure which would be a tremendous, tremendous thing. What do we have to lose?
CG says
There was a panel of 2016 Trump voters on CNN yesterday (half of which will not vote for him now) and one of his remaining supporters is a woman who said her in laws got Covid 19 probably because with masks on they were breathing in their own germs. People are giving this virus to themselves.
My Name Is Jack says
Louie Goehmert is now claiming that wearing a mask might have caused his contracting the virus.

A lot of undecideds in that poll–20%–I’m guessing they didn’t press respondents. Most others do. I’ve heard the best polling comes from questions that try to get a little more of an answer and reduce undecideds. But you can also press too much.
Trump at 34% is crazy. But a fair amount of eventual Republican voters are in that 20% undecideds. That said Biden would see his numbers likely improve a bit too in that scenario

The pundits seem to be buying into Duckworth and Bass at the lead. I find all this really hard to believe.
I would hope for Val Demings. I realize she might be a stretch in terms of lack of “experience”, but at least the messaging and geography makes sense (and she is telegenic.)
Duckworth is a genuine American hero and of course I enjoy the contrast between her and Trump on the service aspect, but I have followed her political career since 2006 and she has been my House Rep and Senator, and she’s just not much of a scholar, to be as polite as possible.
Bass seems like a really nice person and I understand that Biden bonds with her because they have both lost children. If picked, she is going to create an issue in Florida because she basically fawned over Fidel Castro when he died and used a specific term to refer to him that angers many in the Cuban-American community. What can she really bring politically coming from one of the most heavily Democrat House districts in the country?
The thinking is that Biden might be inclined to pick Bass because for one she is unmarried, and he would not have to ever share a stage with the VP’s husband, and more so that she is believed to have zero Presidential ambition and he does not want anyone to “outshine” him. He thinks he is going to be President for eight years and then the next nomination should be up for grabs. Politically, it would be smarter to groom someone to take over either eight years in the future or more realistically four years.
CG says
Duckworth also has a Blagojevich problem from her time in state government, and you can bet that Blago is desperate to get on tv anyway he can these days and of course is completely committed to Trump.
jamesb says
Weak argument for Bass who i think is just getting the spotlight because she has done a good job for the party…
Duckworth ain’t that bright u say?
The woman picked will have to be ready to assume the Presidency from day one…
The examples of other VP choices do not have anything to do with Biden’s situation right now…. Virus…. Economy…. Trade…Foeign Affairs…A crook to succeed…A VERY ROUGH Midterm election 2 years from now and being 82 in 2024….
Joe Biden does NOT someone who has NO experience on the upper levels of government…
Harris and Rice seem to me the best choices and Rice would be my choice again…
She has MORE time on the top level…
Joe Biden should be announcing his choice in no less than 2-3 weeks…

The court voted 5 to 4 against the request, filed by Calvary Chapel Dayton Valley, with Chief Justice John Roberts siding with the liberal-leaning justices. The decision keeps in place a limit of 50 people in houses of worship due to the pandemic.

The church had argued the cap was an unfair attack on its First Amendment rights to free exercise of religion. It pointed out that the state allowed higher caps for restaurants and casinos — 50 percent capacity — but would not let its 90-person congregation assemble, even with social distancing protocols. A federal court upheld the state’s policy, and the church sought an appeal last month at the 9th Circuit….

The Trump campaign has pulled ads in Michigan. Seemingly conceding the 16 electoral votes that along with Wisconsin and Pennsylvania were critical in pushing Trump to Electoral College victory in 2016.
It’s also worth noting that 9 out of 10 dollars Trump is spending on ads is in states he already won in 2016. The campaign is no longer bragging that it can pick off states like Minnesota, Nevada, and New Hampshire that were close Clinton wins four years ago.
In 2012 one of the few things Republicans took solace in was that President Obama was reelected with a smaller popular and electoral vote margin than he was first elected with. This is something that rarely happens. Of course Obama had a nearly 100 EV margin over the GOP in 2008 (365 EVs) so losing 33 of those still kept him at a comfortable 332-206 Electoral Vote margin.
Except for his cheerleaders on social media (who often have Confederate flags in some manner as their avatar) no one is suggesting that Trump can increase his margin from 2016. The best he can hope for is to win the Electoral College by an even slimmer margin than last time–at least according to talk that matters most, his ad dollars.
