While Governor’s, Mayor’s and County officials may begin to loosen restrictions on events and gatherings?
In the end?
It will be up us….The public to do what we feel will be comfortable…
Some of us will go right back to pre-virus actions…
Some of us will still limit personal contacts…
Some of us will venture out to stores that don’t just sell food…
Some will not…
And some of us will be going back to work , like it or not….
In the end?
The economy and America as place will have to wait till we ‘the people’ decide it’s safe for us…
When Maine finally announced this week that hair salons could reopen, Sarah Kyllonen, a stylist in Lewiston, stayed up late wondering what to do, feeling overwhelmed.
The virus still scared her. It seemed too soon to open up. Then again, her bills had not stopped and her unemployment benefits had not started, and she was starting to worry about next month’s rent.
Around midnight on Thursday, she finally drifted off. But she woke an hour later, and did not sleep much after that.
“It’s an extremely hard decision for all of us,” she said. “I want to go back to work. I want to have the money. I want to see people. But it’s hard because I’m worried about the virus coming back around.”
She added: “I can’t get my mind off it. It’s very stressful.”
As states begin to loosen restrictions on their economies, the act of reopening has come down not to governors or even to President Trump, but to millions of individual Americans who are being asked to go back to work.
It is not an easy decision. In homes across the country this week, Americans whose governors said it was time to reopen wrestled with what to do, weighing what felt like an impossible choice.
If they go back to work, will they get sick and infect their families? If they refuse, will they lose their jobs? What if they work on tips and there are no customers? What happens to their unemployment benefits?
The hyperpartisan wrangling between Mr. Trump and governors over whether to reopen has obscured the way many Americans are thinking about the issue. They are not always neatly dividing into two political tribes, with Republicans wanting to see restrictions lifted and Democrats wanting to remain shut down. Even within each person there can be conflicting instincts…

And as “opening up” proceeds apace and the “if I get it I get it” ethos takes hold….
Yesterday, over 2900 deaths occurred, the worst day yet in the United States during the pandemic ,leaving the Univ. Of Washington model, frequently used by the Trump Administration and often quoted by Governors in making their opening decisions, seemingly irrelevant.
The model had predicted that we were weeks past the peak daily numbers of deaths at 2600 or so .I would imagine we will see a revision shortly.
How these sobering numbers will effect consumers as the “opening up” frenzy gains momentum remains to be seen,
jamesb says
The opening up push is just gaining steam…
My wife and i noticed a pickup of vehicle traffic yesterday in the streets
Local news featured new yorkers and jersey crowds at parks and beaches … Some had masks… some not… most observing the distance policy ….
It’s warm weather…
People just ain’t hiding in their houses…
BTW?
New York numbers keep dropping
The Hospital ship has departed
The Javies Center virus overflow operation is over…
Hospitals now have less virus patients then regular sick people
The summer virus thing is real…
It is still there but receding …
Hopeful treatment and vaccine drugs will be plentiful and around by the late fall when people go back inside and the virus numbers climb again like they all do…

After former President George W Bush recorded a video calling for bipartisanship during this pandemic,
The present President ,after a perfunctory thanks ,ripped him one for not not denouncing his impeachment as a hoax.
Looks like Republicans can’t get along with each other much less practice bipartisanship.
Even so, Bush, whom I rarely agreed with but always thought was a decent person, deserved better than this for trying to bring some thoughtful words into the public discourse.
Life in the Age of Trump.
jamesb says
I’ll have a post on Bush II vs Trump
Bad blood there…
CG says
Priceless smallness from Trump
When George W. Bush was President, Donald Trump called on Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Democrats to impeach him.
And now he is sore that George W. Bush did not defend him when he was impeached.
The man needs a diaper and a pacifier.
Scott P says
Well I’m assuming Republican politicians and delegates to the RNC will demand an apology from Trump for his attack on the last GOP President right?
Right?
My Name Is Jack says
Yeah….Riiiiiiiiiiiiggggghhghhhhhtttttt!!!!
CG says
and he should actually be very grateful that George W. Bush decided to not speak his mind on Ukraine or during the impeachment matter, because I do not think he would have liked what he heard.
CG says
Of course, the main takeaway is that in Trump’s mind, his impeachment is on par with a global pandemic. They are one in the same for him. He is a sick individual.
CG says
While I am at it, what is even sicker is his Tweet that he is happy that Kim Jong Un is apparently alive and well. That is not good for America or the world if that madman is alive and well. For some reason, Trump finds a soulmate in him though.
That must have been a very tough thing for the family of Otto Warmbier to have to hear.
CG says
And I haven’t gotten my check yet either.

A few days ago I opined that coronavirus deaths could top 100000.
I was told that was a stretch.
Now only a few days later? As more prior deaths have now been classified as due to the virus, the death count may be over that figure already.Even Trump is now saying it may go over that number.
The way too optimistic numbers being thrown around are no longer realistic.
There is now almost no doubt that deaths will be over 100000 .Indeed, with this probably too early reopening mania? We could pass that number in June.
jamesb says
Yes the number is going to be higher then the down graded numbers…
Remember…
The number is actually a guess….
Some early deaths NOT counted…
Some deaths that where NOT virus have been lumped in….
Even one loss is too high no matter what…
jamesb says
Ok….
I double my suspicion that this number is an educated guess….
The media is reporting these as virus deaths when in fact the person out with the number ADMITS this is a projections and DOES include non virus deaths…
The fact is Jack?
They have NO FUCKING idea how many…
We will get a better understanding a year or more out from now…
There IS a push by some to make the numbers as high as they can to keep people holded up at home…
And saying Trump admits anything IS suspicious …
Quote form the WashPost piece…
…’Those excess deaths — the number beyond what would normally be expected for that time of year — are not necessarily attributable directly to covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.’…

Jack?
The warm weather
ishas people migrating outdoors already…Even the Governor’s are not gonna stop it….
BTW?
NY’s numbers keep dropping SLOWLY
My Name Is Jack says
Let em uh “migrate”
I couldn’t care less.
Why do you direct your irrelevant comments to me?
jamesb says
The study does NOT look for virus deaths…
It just counts numbers over the normal pattern ….
It’s just another model actually…
The number right now is 64k…
My Name Is Jack says
What “study” are you referring to?
jamesb says
Trump’s numbers come from ‘a government modeling pulled together in chart form by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’…
It forecasts 3,000 deaths a day….
Silvers report of ACTUAL reported deaths…
Nate Silver
@NateSilver538
US daily numbers via
@COVID19Tracking
:
Newly reported deaths:
Today: 1,158
Yesterday: 1,651
One week ago (4/26): 1,095
You’ll notice the numbers MORE than half the ‘model’ Trump just threw down…
And…
The numbers ARE fairly level…
Hmmmmm?
jamesb says
A year from now we WILL have an idea of what has been going on for the last 6 months…
It might be VERY different form what we see in the media and from Donald Trump’s lips…
My Name Is Jack says
I’m not talking about “excess deaths” in the past.
I’m talking about daily deaths that are being reported.
As far as your in “suspicions?” Just another example of how, despite your criticisms here of Trump and his supporters? You are just like them.
Paranoid and conspiracy minded.
My Name Is Jack says
The numbers I am stating are the numbers carried by every news reporting service in the country.yeah they’re all wrong because Nate Silver says so?
Your hero worship of Nate Silver is well known.
I’m not referring to “models”
In effect , what you seem to be saying is that nobody knows how many people are dying from Covid 19 and that is an absurd formulation.
As for your “theory” that Trump wants more reported deaths because why exactly?Indeed that s so ridiculous and runs totally contrary to his rosy public statements(much like yours I might add) whereby he daily declares things are getting better. So why would he want more deaths?Thats simply dumb.
jamesb says
The number came from Trump…
Hence it is across the media…
Previous Bull Shit with numbers have been questioned by Silver , who has been right …
Even having Fauci back up…
Just with daily numbers vs the Trump mentioned model numbers should make one question….
And the number from Trump should REALLY make one question them…
The model seems to be based on old March numbers…
I will continue to challenge some of this hair on fire media stuff…
jamesb says
Silver shits like the rest of us
He makes mistakes
We ALL do
My Name Is Jack says
That’s not true.
The daily numbers come from each states health authority.
You are so obsessed with Trump that you somehow believe that he controls all these states authorities, even say Cuomo s New York one!
Daily you spout off increasing levels of nonsense,a mid summer vaccine which no one has said anything about, rosy scenarios that have no basis in reality ,and now the absurd idea that Trump is manipulating the death numbers ,even from those states where the Governors are Democrats.
You are no longer even rational.
This coronavirus thing has made you delusional.
jamesb says
I repeat…
Quote form the WashPost piece…
…’Those excess deaths — the number beyond what would normally be expected for that time of year — are not necessarily attributable directly to covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.’…

Jack?
I have company over at Nate Silver on 538…
People there are increasingly asking WTF the numbers are so HIGH?
And some think Trump wants a higher number out so com Oct or Nov , when the REAL actual virus numbers are confirmed LOWER Trump cans say he fucked up to the BETTER..

Why are *reported* deaths in this slide so different than projected deaths? Was this a model originally developed in March or something? It is very strange.

Projecting ~200K new detected cases each day **by the end of the month** from a current baseline of ~30K is also a LOT, even with quite pessimistic assumptions. I would encourage some caution with taking these at face value.

I don’t think the NYT is reporting that we’ll have 3,000 deaths a day. They’re reporting the White House has a model saying that.
bdogwork says
Am I missing something here, Jack and James seem to be discussing the same thing…Numbers of death are increasing nationwide…FEMA numbers are now projecting they will continue to rise to up to 3000 a day by June…Jack says he reads the news and the death tolls keep climbing as well…Jack and James are going up the same hill…
But I just read what I wrote, and we (meaning America) are almost comfortable, or acclimated or I don’t know how to define with saying 3,000 people a day are dying…that is crazy…we are doing something wrong as a nation…NY was the first example, but it has gotten better here…but if we go back to business as usual our numbers are going to jump..I will say that masks and gloves are an essential item for going and should remain that way whatever way a state chooses to open up…
Will the summer weather help, yeah probably, but if you aren’t covering up your face, you are potentially exposing people and I see a lot of that arent’ covering up in settings they should…
jamesb says
I HAVE made the same point Bdog…
The numbers from FEMA are reflective of NO social distancing, masks, gloves or anything…
THAT isn’t gonna be the situation for a LONG time….
The model from FEMA IS wrong and misleading…
But the sly Trump is using the numbers to cover his ass both ways…
I have been suspicious of the numbers throw around for a while…
They have all sorts of inconsistencies and outright guesses for healthcare and officials which find their way into numerous models that are ALL ov er the place…
Of course the media will ALWAYS pick the worst hair on fire numbest to screen the shit out everyone ….
Thus making the bad…
WORST…

This weekend I corrected someone that the COVID-19 death toll in the US took two months, not one, two equal Vietnam, but that @realDonaldTrump could probably get us up to one Vietnam War per month.
This morning I turn on my phone and see this.
Damn.
JetBear
The idea that we’d have 200k cases a day in 4 weeks is more absurd than the idea that deaths would suddenly stop on May 15.
We probably couldn’t get to 200k cases/day if we started trying to infect ourselves on purpose.
jamesb says
Update NY will begin Phase II of the NY Governor reopening stages probably on May 15th…(There are 4 stages)
Gov Cuomo says regions (counties) must show declines in several categories …
