President Trump announced that his administration will extend social distancing guidelines until April 30 in an effort to stop the spread of coronavirus, which has now infected more than 130,000 Americans and killed nearly 2,500, Axios reports.
Said Trump: “The modeling estimates that the peak in death rate is likely to hit in two weeks. So, I’ll say it again, the peak — the highest point of death rates, remember this — is likely to hit in two weeks. Nothing would be worse than declaring victory before the victory is won. That would be the greatest loss of all.”
He later told reporters his desire to end social distancing on Easter Sunday was only “aspirational.”
President Trump took to Twitter to tout the ratings of his coronavirus news conferences.
Said Trump: “Because the ‘Ratings’ of my News Conferences etc. are so high, ‘Bachelor finale, Monday Night Football type numbers’ according to the @nytimes, the Lamestream Media is going CRAZY.”
After his initial tweet, he sent four follow-up tweets quoting from a New York Times story on his ratings.

While all the networks were pre-empting whatever they or their local affiliates would otherwise have been showing, it’s hardly all that surprising that these briefings got high ratings (no on-air competition).
But the networks and stations have got wise — either to the fact that much of what the President says is false and even harmful, or to the way he can’t help turning them into free, live Glorify Me political commercials unchallenged by any opponent — and have stopped pre-empting other programming to broadcast them live and uncut.
(My TV is usually set to over-the-air channels rather than cable, so I assume that those who really want to see these briefings live can do so on C-Span, CNN, Fox News ;and/or MSNBC.)
I hardly watch the TV networks anymore….

According to CDC, this year’s flu season has led to at least 17 million medical visits and 370,000 hospitalizations. CDC found that the percentage of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness increased to 5.2% in the week ending on March 7, up from 5.1% the previous week. The national baseline for those visits is 2.4%.
CDC estimated that there have been at least 22,000 deaths related to the flu so far this season.

I will have to be sure to get a regular flu shot next year if I survive this year. Hopefully, there will be something for Covid-19 available too eventually.
I think I remember getting a flu shot several years ago and I got sick from it, which apparently happens from time to time.
We give little thought to how many people die each year from the regular flu, Still, these projections we heard yesterday about potential cases and possible deaths is just unfathomable and immensely depressing.
And I am still being expected to come to an office five days a week not all that far from one of the major current metropolitan hotspots. Yes, we keep hearing they are working on increasing capacity for more of us to work from home. Who knows how long that will take?
These figures can be days behind the actual number.
They have certainly not “plateaued.”
