“It was a much stronger, much more focused delivery from Biden,”
says. “When Democratic voters are as focused on electability as they seem to be, and Biden has that kind of advantage, that’s the kind of night he needed, probably.” #TrackingKornacki
Well, there are two candidates who I thought definitely had good evenings, and then several I’m not sure about. I’ll start with Klobuchar, the candidate who I was assigned to cover tonight. I thought this was not only her best debate, but one of the better debates that any Democrat has had so far in the cycle. I say that because she was both pretty good on the substance and smart tactically — going after Buttigieg by emphasizing electability and experience is exactly the strategy I advocated for her at the start of the evening. I don’t know whether we’re going to get a Klobuchar surge — she’s at only at 3 percent nationally so she has a looooong way to go! — but if there’s one in the cards, tonight might have been the catalyst for it.
The other candidate I thought did well was Biden, who really had his first gaffe-free debate all campaign….

Among the winners were former Vice President Joe Biden, who “has had a series of uneasy debates but this was by far his strongest yet,” Koch said.”He was crisp, funny, provided clear reasons for why he’s running. He wrapped himself in his service as President Obama’s Vice President while also breaking with him on important issues like Afghanistan.”
Mayor Pete Buttigieg also shined: “After steadily rising in the polls, Mayor Pete’s team has been anticipating these attacks for months and tonight he was clearly ready for them, fending off each one.”…

I would agree that Klobuchar and Biden gained the most-Klobuchar because she had the opportunity to talk more than in the other debates, and did do effectively. Biden gained because this was easily his best performance. I don’t think Biden stood out – but I do think he stood out for doing poorly in past debates. But those who expected to see Biden get confused didn’t see it. After the debate I had more comfort with Biden than before the debate.
I thought all of the Dems performed well.

About 6.171 million people watched December’s Democratic debate hosted by CNN, Politico and PBS NewsHour on Thursday, according to Nielsen data cited by CNN on Friday.
The big picture: That makes Thursday’s debate the least-watched of this election cycle, The Hollywood Reporter notes. The second night of the first debate, hosted by NBC, MSNBC and Telemundo in June, was the most-watched Democratic primary debate of all time, with 18.1 million people tuning in….

First post debate poll rundown….
In terms of raw debate grades — respondents graded candidates on a four-point scale (higher scores are better) — Biden got the highest average score, closely followed by Sanders and Warren, who tied for second; Yang and Klobuchar also did well….
