The Republican Party, which controls power in Washington and both states where America’s most recent mass shootings occurred, struggled on Sunday to provide a response or offer a solution to what has become a public safety epidemic.
There were thoughts and prayers, an appeal to donate blood, accolades for law enforcement and a presidential proclamation to lower flags to half-staff to honor the victims — 29 killed in El Paso and Dayton, Ohio, and dozens more wounded over 13 hours.
Some Republicans, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) and Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, cited the influence of social media and video games or mentioned mental health problems. But on the question of how to stem the rising tide of gun violence, the overwhelming response from the party was silence or generalities.
“We have to get it stopped. This has been going on for years,” President Trump told reporters Sunday afternoon shortly before returning to Washington — his first public comments since the shootings.
The reaction mirrored how the GOP has responded after other mass shootings whose city names have become painfully familiar to most Americans — Parkland, Fla.; Sutherland Springs, Tex.; Las Vegas; Virginia Beach; Pittsburgh and Annapolis, Md.
A handful of Republican lawmakers on Sunday endorsed stricter gun controls, but most in the GOP ignored Democratic demands that the Senate abandon its summer recess and return to Washington to address the issue. The House passed two bills in February that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has refused to consider….

The Republican Party is enabling white supremacy in our country. As a lifelong Republican, it pains me to say this, but it’s the truth.
I of course am not suggesting that all Republicans are white supremacists nor am I saying that the average Republican is even racist.
They’re not going to do anything.
They can’t.
Any move they make will alienate their constituency.
While Republicans are ridiculed for only sending out “prayers?”They really believe that’s all that is proper or necessary.Wait awhile and it will all blow over.
History shows that they’re right.
Sad ,but such is the reality.
Remember how the President convened members of both parties in both Houses of Congress and agreed to some measure of gun control, only to renege two days later (no doubt overwhelmed by Right News and policy advocates like the NRA).

While marrying immigration to background checks would be a non-starter, they are the two issues where Trump walked out of a bipartisan meeting leaving the other participants believing they had a deal, or the beginning of a deal, only to see Trump do a second 180 two days later.
Of couirse things could turn out differently on the second go-round, but it seems that nearly every member of Congress would be unable to accept something — on either guns or immigration.
We cannot let those killed in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, die in vain. Likewise for those so seriously wounded. We can never forget them, and those many who came before them. Republicans and Democrats must come together and get strong background checks, perhaps marrying….
…this legislation with desperately needed immigration reform. We must have something good, if not GREAT, come out of these two tragic events!
The Media has a big responsibility to life and safety in our Country. Fake News has contributed greatly to the anger and rage that has built up over many years. News coverage has got to start being fair, balanced and unbiased, or these terrible problems will only get worse!
