It seems like the MORE Donald Trump rants about the border?
The MORE people show up to cross it?….
The number of migrants arrested at the U.S.-Mexico border soared to nearly 133,000 in May, according to statistics released Wednesday by Customs and Border Protection.
The latest figures will keep pressure on Congress to deal with a surge of Central American migrants who have arrived at the border in recent months.
In response to the influx, the Trump administration has urged lawmakers to approve a $4.5 billion supplemental funding request that would cover housing for unaccompanied minors and detention for single adults, among other expenses.
Border arrests — a rough proxy for illegal crossings — have risen in recent months to levels on par with the higher-traffic decades of the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. President Donald Trump and his top officials have argued the surge has overwhelmed federal authorities and created a humanitarian and security crisis.
Trump has heaped part of the blame on the Mexican government and threatened to impose a 5 percent tariff on Mexican goods by Monday if the country doesn’t step up immigration enforcement. Mexican officials traveled to Washington this week to negotiate a solution and were scheduled to meet with Vice President Mike Pence at the White House Wednesday afternoon.
Democratic leaders have faulted the Trump administration for mismanagement, citing a Homeland Security Department shakeup in April and May that forced the departure of Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and other top officials. In addition, they’ve criticized Trump for his focus on the construction of a border wall that they view as ineffective and costly….
Democratic spending leaders have said any funding would be limited to humanitarian aid, mostly for families and unaccompanied minors. But a majority of the Hispanic Caucus 38 members said they are deeply skeptical that the Trump administration would use the funds for the humanitarian crisis instead of enforcing the White House’s border policies and still want the House to take a harder line against Trump.
“There’s got to be guard rails around any money so that it’s used for humanitarian relief and it’s not diverted toward Trump’s deportation machine,” Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas), chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, said in an interview….
And then there is this as the Trump admin applies the screws to the Democrats and detained kids…
The Trump administration said Wednesday that it would begin restricting or canceling education, legal aid and playground recreation for migrant children housed in government shelters as a result of financial constraints created by the “crisis at the border.”
The government’s plans were swiftly rebuked by civil rights lawyers representing unaccompanied children, who have been crossing the border in ever-larger numbers this year to flee poverty and violence in their home countries, mainly in Central America. And the chief of at least one large shelter operator said he would continue to offer education and sports at his network’s facilities.
Some 13,200 migrant children, including adolescents who crossed the border alone and young children who were separated from their parents, are currently housed in more than 100 shelters across the country. They receive English instruction, as well as math, civics and other classes. Most facilities have a sports field and allow children to go outside, often to play soccer, at least once a day….
