House Democrat Nancy Pelosi is back!…

And her Democratic House members have her back…..

House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) on Thursday during the first session of the new Congress rose to nominate Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) as the next Speaker.“House Democrats are down with NDP, Nancy D’Alesandro Pelosi, the once and future Speaker of the United States House of Representatives,” he said on the floor in what appeared to be a reference to a 1990s Naughty by Nature song, “Down with OPP.”

Jeffries, who is often discussed as a future Speaker, was met with roaring applause from the left side of the chamber….

  2. Brexit: Second Commons defeat for Theresa May in 24 hours

    Rebel Conservative MPs have joined forces with Labour to inflict a fresh blow on Theresa May’s government in a Commons Brexit vote.

    It means the government will have to come up with revised plans within three days if Mrs May’s EU withdrawal deal is rejected by MPs next week.

    It could also open the door to alternatives, such as a referendum.

    No 10 said Mrs May’s deal was in the national interest but if MPs disagreed, the government would “respond quickly”.

    The setback for the PM came as MPs started five days of debate on the withdrawal agreement with the EU, and the framework for future relations, ahead of the meaningful vote next Tuesday.

    The government was expecting to have 21 days to come up with a “plan B” for Brexit if, as widely expected, Mrs May’s deal is voted down.

    But MPs backed calls for it to respond within three working Parliamentary days, a deadline likely to fall on Monday 21 January.

    Theresa May lost by 11 votes, with 297 MPs siding with the government and 308 against.

    Among those voting against were 17 Conservatives, including former ministers Justine Greening, Sam Gyimah and Jo Johnson who want to see another referendum to decide whether the UK should leave or not.

    Former attorney general Dominic Grieve, the Conservative MP who led the rebellion, said he was acting out of a sense of a “deepening crisis” over Brexit.

    He told the BBC there had been too much “can-kicking” by the government and if the PM lost next week’s vote, she would need to have “serious dialogue” with MPs about alternative options.

    He said there was no need for the prime minister to go to Brussels to try and improve the deal.

    “I would rather hope that the government has been focusing on alternatives as it has been pretty clear for three to four months that the PM’s deal is in trouble,” he added.

    Fellow rebel Sarah Wollaston said she and other MPs opposed to a no-deal exit were engaged in a “guerrilla campaign” to show that it would never get the consent of Parliament.

  3. Brexit: Jeremy Corbyn demands election to ‘break deadlock’

    Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has stepped up calls for a general election “at the earliest opportunity” to “break the deadlock” over Brexit.

    In a speech, he said a new government would have a fresh mandate to negotiate a better withdrawal deal with the EU.

    He told Theresa May: “If you are so confident in your deal, call that election, and let the people decide.”

    The Conservatives said Labour did not have a plan for Brexit and were “playing politics”.

    Mr Corbyn has resisted growing calls from within his own party to get behind another EU referendum, insisting an election is still his top priority if Theresa May’s Brexit deal is rejected by MPs next week.

    The UK is set to leave the European Union on 29 March. The withdrawal agreement between the UK and EU – covering things like trade, expat citizens’ rights and setting up a 20-month transition period – will only come into force if MPs back it in a vote.

    Labour is set to vote against Mrs May’s deal next Tuesday and if, as widely expected, it is defeated, they are expected to start moves to trigger a general election.

    Asked if this would happen immediately, Mr Corbyn said Labour would “table a motion of no confidence in the government at the moment we judge it to have the best chance of success”.

    If a majority of MPs back a no confidence motion, the government will get 14 days to try and win another confidence vote – if it can’t do that, a general election will be held.

    Mr Corbyn said: “Clearly, Labour does not have enough MPs in parliament to win a confidence vote on its own. So members across the House should vote with us to break the deadlock.”

    Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party, which is also against Mrs May’s deal, has said it will back her in any confidence vote.

    As debate on the Brexit deal resumed in the House of Commons for the second of five days, it emerged that some of Mr Corbyn’s Leave-supporting backbench MPs have been speaking to Theresa May about backing her deal if she can guarantee environmental standards and rights for workers.

    But Mr Corbyn said Labour did not “endorse or accept” a reported offer from the government to adopt an amendment to protect workplace and environmental rights.

    “It’s already been quite clearly and emphatically rejected by the TUC and leading trade unions. They say it simply doesn’t guarantee the protections that we are seeking.”….

      • But there’s a difference: many (in all parties, including almost every Liberal Democrat) want a second Brexit referendum (a “People’s Vote”), while by contrast Jeremy Corbyn and many other members of the Opposition are looking to prompt a second General Election in less than two years.

        Although it might solve or resolve a host of problems, a second referendum might not stop the clock and has one chief difficulty — according to the general drift of public opinion polls, a People’s Vote will again yield a fairly small margin, probably less than 52.5% either way. The polls say any result this time (making huge assumptions about the size and composition of the turnout) would be for Remain, but few trust the poll’s accuracy given how surprised everyone was by the actual results of the first Brexit referendum in June 2016.

  4. The latest RealClearPolitics average seems to include its first Rasmussen Report on this question since October (when approval stood at 49-49), which would also be the first one since the shutdown began at the end of December.

    Taken over Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week (Jan. 14-16), Rasumussen’s latest stands at 44-55 = – 11%.

    • Rasmussen has consistently given Trump better approval numbers in the RCP average and sky’s the average up for Trump….

      RCP leans slightly to the right , so they carry Ras….

      I just posted a piece that has another Trump poll at 39%….

      There have been a few occasionally over the last two months….

      Even the %#* polling has Trump down from around 44% to 40%…..

      There is NO DOUBT that Pelosi IS kicking his ass on this…
      And it’s MORE HIS fault….
      Oh, and I’d put some of the blame on the GOP lawmakers enabling the knucklehead….

  5. KellyAnne Conway should be a good pollstress for Trump, given her record in 2016 (when she saw in the so-called Blue Wall what the Clinton campaign analytics team had not). I wonder if she’s missed this new situation, or if she’s giving the President good advice that he just (for various reasons and unreasons) passes over or dismisses.

  10. MPs reject move to delay departure date

    MPs have voted against a proposal to delay Brexit in order to prevent the UK leaving without a deal.

    The amendment had been put forward by Labour MP Yvette Cooper, but was rejected by 23 votes.

    MPs are voting on changes to Theresa May’s Brexit plan before she seeks a re-negotiation of it with the EU.

    The prime minister has urged MPs to back another amendment that would propose “alternative arrangements” to the controversial Irish backstop plan.

    The backstop is is the insurance policy in Mrs May’s plan to prevent checks on goods and people returning to the Northern Ireland border, which some MPs fear could leave the UK tied to the EU’s rules indefinitely.

    It was a key part in seeing her original Brexit deal voted down in Parliament by an historic margin earlier in January.

    Mrs May said she knew there was a “limited appetite” in the EU for changes to the deal, but she believed she could “secure” it.

    She had phone calls with key EU leaders throughout the day ahead of the Commons votes and has already spoken to the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and the Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar.

    But the EU has said it will not re-open negotiations and change the legal text agreed with the UK PM.

    MPs are currently voting on an amendment put forward by Tory MP Caroline Spelman and Labour MP Jack Dromey with the aim of preventing a no deal Brexit.

    Three amendments – tabled by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, the SNP’s Westminster leader Ian Blackford and Tory backbencher Dominic Grieve – had already been voted down by the House.

    Mr Corbyn’s amendment was voted down by 327 votes to 296, Mr Blackford’s only saw 39 votes of support, compared to 327 votes against, and Mr Grieve, who wanted MPs to be given six days to debate Brexit alternatives, lost by 321 votes to 301.

    This was followed by Ms Cooper’s, which lost by 321 votes to 298, and one by Labour MP Rachel Reeves – also trying to postpone Brexit – which lost by 322 votes to 290.

    There are three more amendments to be tabled that could be voted on – including the government-backed amendment from Tory MP Sir Graham Brady, calling for an “alternative” to the Irish backstop, which Tory MPs have been ordered to back….
