Emanuel , the former Obama Chief of Staff, has had a rough time in office since day one….
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel unexpectedly announced Tuesday that he will not be running for re-election.
In a last-minute press conference, the mayor revealed he would be stepping down from his post after serving since 2011.
“This has been the job of a lifetime but it is not a job for a lifetime,” he said.
The upcoming race began to take shape, with potential candidates already throwing their hats into the ring, including former Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy, who was fired by Emanuel in the wake of the release of video showing the fatal police shooting of Laquan McDonald…..

How do I find this news out here of all places?
Wow. Shocking.

I’m on the case!…..

He was going to have a hard time surviving a runoff but this is still pretty surprising considering the money he was sitting on,
I cannot imagine where his white support may go or who else may get in the race. This would seem to benefit the candidacy of Paul Vallas, but a whole slew of Latino candidates will probably run, as there were none in what was already a large field before. Many of the candidates who are running now, were running strictly against Rahm.
What does this do for Pat Quinn’s campaign to put term limits on the November 2016 ballot, which could have possibly forced Rahm out of the race? That’s all moot now.
It’s going to be pretty polarizing as a runoff is either going to be a white candidate vs. African American, or white vs. Latino, or Latino vs. African-American, with the third group playing the swing vote in the runoff.

I’m sure the guy got tired of the continual headwinds he was fighting….
Maybe he could get a job as Biden’s Chief of Staff?
CG says
Any Democrat running for President will want to stay far away from him. The headlines are only going to get worse as a trial is getting underway this week for a police officer who killed a black man.
Clearly, the polling data he saw looked bad.
I had a feeling eight years ago that whomever succeeded Richard Daley would be a short-term transitional like figure. He did manage to win reelection once though.

Agreed
I said the Biden comment in jest….
He is a bit toxic right now ….

In regards to “headwinds”, he pretty much still had the City Council under his control with his own people/allies. That makes this even more unusual

Never was a fan of the guy. Always seemed like a jerk.
Democratic Socialist Dave says
From what I’ve read, he was kind of a jerk running Clinton’s inaugural ceremonies, and as a chief of staff (although the job description for Chief of Staff includes the ability to say No and push people around).
CG says
Everyone has pretty much always known what a “jerk” he is. It’s part of the reputation that he has always embraced.
