Cameras captured stunned Pressley learning of her upset victory…
Boston City Council member Ayanna Pressley stunned observers Tuesday by defeating long-serving Rep. Michael Capuano in the Democratic primary for the 7th Congressional District in Massachusetts.
With no Republican on the ballot in November’s midterm election, Pressley is now almost certain to become the state’s first black congresswoman.

I think Councillor Presley would be the second African-American of either sex to represent Massachusetts in Congress, the first to serve in the House of Representatives, and the first from the Democratic Party.
In 1966, then-Atty-Gen. Edward Brooke (R) was the first African-American ever elected to the U.S, Senate from any state. [During Reconstuction, Hiram R. Revels and Blanche K Bruce were elected to the Senate by the Mississippi Legislature and seated, while former Gov. P.B.S. Pinchback was elected by Louisiana’s legislators but denied a seat. See:

In Massachusetts Third Congressional District, formerly represented by Marty Meehan and currently by retiring Rep. Niki Tsongas (widow of U.S. Sen. Paul Tsongas, who once sought the Democratic presidential nomination), the Dem. primary results were so close on Tuesday 4 Sept. that a recount has been ordered.
Secretary of State (or rather the Commonwealth) Bill Galvin (D) has taken command of the recount process in the 3rd District’s two largest cities, the historic textile milltowns (and centers of labor strife) of Lowell and Lawrence. The concern is not so much over honesty as over competence and inadequate local resources.
In a ten-candidate race last week, Dan Koh (a former chief of staff to Boston Mayor Martin Walsh) trailed former Meehan chief-of-staff Lori Trahan by just 122 votes out of 85,591.
18,527 (21.6%) — Lori Trahan
18, 405 (21.6%) — Dan Koh
