The man is beginning to sound like Trump….
One minute he’s got Trump’s back…
The next he’ll knocked the party leader?
He joins the Trump fan club of Republicans lawmakers who huff and puff and then line up and vote FOR most things Trump…
Utah Senate candidate Mitt Romney pledged Sunday to be an independent voice within the Republican Party if he is elected and to speak his mind, good or bad, about President Donald Trump.
“People ask me why I feel compelled to express my disagreements with the president. I believe that when you are known as a member of a ‘team,’ and the captain says or does something you feel is morally wrong, if you stay silent, you tacitly assent to the captain’s posture,” Romney wrote in an op-ed published Sunday by The Salt Lake Tribune. “I appreciate the argument made by those who believe we should stay silent, but I cannot subscribe to it.”
The relationship between Romney and Trump has been fraught at times throughout the latter’s political career, dating back to a 2016 speech in which Romney labeled Trump a “fraud” and a “phony” in a last-ditch effort to gin up GOP opposition to his primary campaign. The president was similarly harsh in his rebuke of Romney, the 2012 Republican nominee for president.
But Romney and Trump’s relationship appeared to warm somewhat after the 2016 election with the former Massachusetts governor apparently having been considered to become the president’s first secretary of state. Still, Trump worked hard but ultimately unsuccessfully to keep Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), a reliable ally on Capitol Hill, from retiring and thereby creating an opening for Romney to run in the deep red state.
But while Romney has continued to speak out against Trump, his rhetoric directed at the president has been sparing….

He’s not saying anything in his Op-Ed he has not said before.
He makes it clear he intends to speak out when compelled and that “character” is as important, if not more so, than “issues.”
His professorial description about Republicans who view support for Trump as something that is done as a “team” sure felt like he was very politely demonstrating how ridiculous it was.
And he makes it clear to point out that Trump called him, Romney, a “straight shooter” and that he intends to live up to that.

I think the guy is trying to have things BOTH ways….
That COULD cause him trouble with his parties voters come election day…

Romney has no electoral concerns in Utah this year.
I think the Op-Ed expressed his position pretty clearly. It definitely made a lot more sense than his wild 2020 prognosticating from a couple weeks ago.

Unless something crazy happen’s?
I agree
The job should be his.,,.
But that doesn’t mean that he will actually speak out as the voice anti’Trump GOP in Congress
