Two Republican lawmakers who had threatened to vote against Todd Blanche’s nomination to become the next attorney general said Monday they are now prepared offer their support after he formally killed a key aspect of President Donald Trump’s controversial deal with the IRS.
In an order Blanche issued late Sunday, the acting attorney general said he was rescinding, in writing, the Trump administration’s proposal for a $1.8 billion fund for people who claimed they were victims of political prosecutions. He also clarified that a separate aspect of Trump’s deal, which offered the president, his family members and their companies protection from past tax claims, did not preclude future IRS audits….

Trump, who in recent days had reiterated his desire for a payout fund to help his political allies, did not comment Monday morning. His personal lawyers declined to comment.
If the agreement holds, it would end days of back-and-forth that saw two prominent GOP senators take on Trump, prompting sharp criticism from a president who has not been accustomed to resistance from his own party.
Still, Blanche’s order appeared to fall short of what Cornyn and Tillis were demanding last week. The two senators said they needed to see revisions to the original settlement agreement, while Blanche issued separate statements stating the Justice Department’s interpretation of the agreement…

Trump has raised more doubts about his intentions.
He threatened Friday to temporarily withdraw Blanche’s nominationand resubmit it next year, after Cornyn and Tillis had left the Senate.
The same day, Trump’s lawyers said they would appeal a recent order from the federal judge who was overseeing his case against the IRS before the settlement with the Justice Department. The judge had denounced the suit as an illegitimate legal dispute, given that lawyers on both sides ultimately reported to the president. She accused the parties of attempting to manipulate the court process and using the lawsuit as a pretext to come up with a questionable deal reached without court approval.

Even hours before Blanche issued his order Sunday, Trump again expressed support for the idea of compensating Jan. 6 rioters, who he said had had “their lives destroyed.”
“This would be a reimbursement for the pain that they suffered,” he said of the fund, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One. “A lot of people like it.”…
