Officials familiar with the defense secretary’s thinking believe he is considering a run for president or some other office after his time in the Trump administration ends.
Hegseth will take a U.S.-funded military aircraft to Iowa, the Pentagon said. He is doing so because he is “designated as a ‘required use’ traveler” by the U.S. government “and is mandated to use military aircraft for all travel, both official and unofficial, due to the continuous need for secure communications and responsive transportation for national security.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was scheduled to head to Iowa on Monday to give remarks, speak to veterans and campaign, sources told CBS News, as Republicans try to protect multiple GOP-held seats in Congress.
A parade of top Trump administration officials has been traveling to the battleground state in support of GOP candidates and for official business.
Spokespeople for the Pentagon didn’t immediately answer a request for comment.
Among those who booked Iowa stops in recent days: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Small Business Association Administrator Kelly Loeffler, VA Secretary Doug Collins, NATO’s Matt Whitaker and others.
Although Iowa has been red for several cycles now, Democrats are bullishabout their candidates this year. Two U.S. House seats, currently held by Republican Reps. Zach Nunn and Mariannette Miller-Meeks, are considered very competitive, and there are open races for both a U.S. Senate seat and the governor’s office.
Hegseth will appear at an event for Nunn, who currently serves as a colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. Nunn served the Air Force for nearly two decades, and has been in Congress since 2023.
In 2024, Nunn won his race by just four points, and the Cook Political Report rates his seat as lean Republican….

Pete Hegseth Is Talking About a Possible Run for President
“Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has told close friends and associates that he is considering a run for president in 2028,” NBC News reports.
“Hegseth and his wife, Jennifer, have floated the idea of a presidential run for the past few months, believing he has some of the same attributes that have made Donald Trump popular with the MAGA movement… Trump’s core voters appreciate Hegseth’s toughness, defiance and conservative stance on social issues.”

Hegseth Blocks Promotions of Four Army Officers
“Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is blocking the promotions of four Army officers selected for promotion to one-star rank, a highly unusual move that appears to be targeting officers who worked for generals he does not like,” the New York Times reports.
“So far this year Mr. Hegseth has removed at least 45 officers, selected by boards made up of peers, from promotion lists. More than half of those officers have been female or Black.”
“Mr. Hegseth’s actions appear to violate the rules governing a promotion system that is meant to be apolitical and merit-based.”
