Fighting between the United States and Iran abated for the first time in two weeks on Saturday. But tensions still simmered in the region after Ukraine hit an Iranian cargo ship in the Caspian Sea and a militia in Yemen said it attacked energy facilities in Saudi Arabia.
Neither the United States nor Iran acknowledged any direct strikes or counterstrikes, a rare lull after two weeks of clashes that have effectively unraveled a cease-fire signed in June.
However, two other vital waterways in the region were affected.
Ukraine said it struck a cargo vessel moving military supplies between Iran and Russia in the Caspian Sea. Iran’s foreign ministry confirmed it was an Iranian vessel, and that one crew member was killed in the strike and another wounded. The Caspian Sea, which borders Iran, has long served as a secure conduit for Iranian weapons, according to Western intelligence assessments.
Also, in the Red Sea, a spokesman for Saudi-led forces operating in Yemen said they had attacked Houthi military targets on Saturday. The Houthis, a Yemeni militia backed by Iran, said they had fired rockets and drones at energy facilities in two areas along Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast.
A video clip circulating on social media Saturday and verified by The New York Times showed plumes of smoke coming from the direction of the Saudi Aramco refinery in Jazan, Saudi Arabia. The Saudi authorities did not immediately respond to a request for a comment, nor provide further details.
The Houthis declared a maritime blockade on Saudi vessels earlier this week, adding pressure on global oil prices. Although some tankers have made it through, the militia has fired on passing ships.
The decrease in fighting hardly soothed fears that the situation could still deteriorate. President Trump met with advisers on Friday to discuss a potential escalation with Iran, according to four people briefed on the discussion.
Those consultations came just days before the president was set to meet Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. His visit, on Tuesday, would be the first since he argued in February for a joint U.S.-Israeli offensive against Iran, which began weeks later.
The Trump administration has had little success in its war aims, having failed to topple the Iranian government and end its nuclear program. Instead, Iranian forces have effectively blockaded the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global oil and gas shipments, throttling global energy supplies.

- The Saudi-led coalition struck several Houthi targets across Yemen in order to degrade the Houthis’ capabilities to threaten Saudi-linked shipping in the Red Sea and strike Saudi critical infrastructure.
- The Houthis responded by attacking Saudi vessels and Red Sea ports. Houthi attacks on oil infrastructure in major Red Sea port cities compound the tactical effects of the group’s blockade on Saudi Arabia, which raises the cost for Saudi Arabia to continue air operations in Houthi-controlled territory.
- The United States did not conduct a wave of overnight strikes in Iran for the first time in 13 days. An Iranian health ministry spokesperson confirmed that the United States had not conducted any attacks in Iran since July 24. US President Donald Trump reportedly ordered the US military to hold strikes on Iran several hours after an Omani delegation arrived in Tehran to discuss efforts to re-open the Strait of Hormuz with the Iranians.
- Iran has fired advanced variants of the Kheybar Shekan medium-range ballistic missiles (MRBM) at regional US bases during the current conflict that have evaded US defenses, according to US officials speaking to the Wall Street Journal. One US official stated that some of these missiles have successfully evaded US defenses.
