Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was the latest host of the White House press briefing, where on Thursday he took aim at reporting from The Washington Post about a planned commemorative $250 bill with President Trump’s face on it.
“I don’t really understand this Washington Post article, but who here is from the Post?” he said, flipping through a printed-out version of the article.
When the reporter identified themselves, Bessent said, “Terribly written, terribly edited.”
“Because basically what it says is that Treasury is following the law, and that we’ve created the bill, and that it’s up to Congress … I didn’t really understand what the story was,” he said.
The Post reported Thursday that Trump officials have moved forward with designing a commemorative $250 bill with Trump’s face and signature on it, including the Treasury Department.
Bessent was asked about the $250 bill several times throughout the briefing. He pushed back against CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, who asked about Treasury Department appointees who have urged the staff at the agency’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing to be ready with prototypes.
“Yes, of course,” he said of his political appointees making the push. “But we prepare for everything if it gets passed, just like we were ready six months in advance for the One Big Beautiful Bill for tax guidance.”
“We have to prepare in advance,” he said. “You can’t draw something up the day before.”….

Employees within the department raised concerns over the bill because current federal law states that only deceased individuals can appear on U.S. currency, the Post reported.
Legislation in Congress would be needed to change that, but a bill introduced more than a year ago to make the case has not made it out of committees….
